Important Letter about the Collection of Folk Music

Typed letter signed ("Béla Bartók"), in Hungarian, 1 page, folio (13½ x 8¼ in.), Budapest, September 14, 1937. To the literature historian and general secretary of the Hungarian Academy of Science, Géza Voinovich (1877-1952) about the publication of the Hungarian folk songs collected by Bartók and Kodály: "Since September 1924 the work for printing [the collection] is on the way. During that time I have revised the transcript of all the phonograph cylinders - 1062 cylinders - at the same time Kodály selected from the existing literature any related material….The material to be published comprises circa 12 thousand melodies, and the publication will consist of about 4000 pages 4to. With the ownership signature of Bruckner's assistant and copyist "Victor Christ 1891" and an earlier signature of Ig. Scheidtenberger. Spotting, some small tears and toning around the edges, central vertical crease, else very good.

Letter to Evelyn Byrne, in full: “Your students’ question is difficult to answer, mainly because different books influence one at different stages of one’s develpoment. Roughly, though, I could name the following: In my ‘teens, the big influence was Jean-Christophe of Rolland (about a German musician). In my twenties, undoubtedly The Magic Mountain of Thomas Mann and Ulysses of James Joyce. In my thirties, Human Destiny by Lecomte de Nouy. And now, in my forties, without any second thoughts, the Nabokov novels, Lolita and Pale Fire.” In fine condition, with trivial creasing to right side and trimmed bottom edge. Oblong folio (9.625 x 11.875 inches; 244 x 303 mm.). [25] leaves. Written in black ink in an unknown hand on ten-stave paper. Watermarked: 1806 (?) and "Evans & Sons". Binding size: 10.5 x 12.75 inches; 269 x 323 mm.). No. 1 - No. 82. Contemporary marbled paper covered boards with dark blue morocco-grain paper spine and brown leather tips. Binding quite worn, with loss to both paper and leather, especially at board edges. Piece of paper (upper half torn away) affixed to front board inscribed ind faded black ink: "Lord Nelson fa... / at Burnham Thorpe. / & sold at the Burnham / Thorpe sale 40 years ago. / [flourish]." With a small circular label in the lower corner of the front board numbered in ink: 373. First leaf soiled and darkened with a tiny tear to lower edge, paper slightly browned, especially at the edges, small bookseller's ticket on front pastedown. Signed Photograph

Signed original doublweight Jane Bown portrait photograph of the important English composer, a schoolmate of Ralph Vaughan-Williams who was prolific in all styles and wrote the music for the great H.G. Wells inspired film "Things to Come." While in the US for a holiday, the Second World War broke out. and Bliss initially stayed in America, teaching at the University of California, Berkeley. He made the hazardous Atlantic crossing to England in 1941 and became director of music at the BBC from 1942 - 1944. 15.5 x 20 cm. Light silvering around the edges, and a light vertical crease, else fine.

Graphically interesting complete March 4, 1971 program from a performance by the important French composer and conductor, leading the BBC Sympohony Orchestra in a Munich Pro Musica Meisterzyklus performance which included Debussy's La Mer, Bartok's "Miraculous Mandarin," and Boulez's own "Eclat." Very uncommon group of four letters from important French composer and conductor, one of the major innovators and forces in 20th century music. Addressed to Dr. Manfred Hubricht, the letters concern the arrangement of four performances of Wozzeck in Frankfurt. Each 1 page, two in French, two in German, dated 21 May to 26 November 1966.
