Rare boldly penned AMQS of the great violinist to the celebrated soprano Delphine Ugalde. Four detailed measures, titled "Preludio" and marked "Andante espress.," inscribed "à la Grande Artiste Madame Ugalde," signed "H. Vieuxtemps" and dated Paris, 16 June 1874. An additional AMQS by the important soprano Erminia Frezzolini, of seven bars of 'Non mi dir' (Act II, Scene V of Mozart's Don Giovanni), is neatly penned beneath, similarly inscribed "A ma Celebre ami Madame Ugalde), signed and dated 1 January, 1878 and with a trimmed image of her affixed above. Vieuxtemps was one of the most imporant musicians of the 19th century. As one of the greatest of all violin virtuosos, he was compared to Paganini by both Schumann and Berlioz. As a composer, he was an important reformer of the concerto and in this regard, according to Grove, "can be compared to Liszt."
Autograph letter from the great violinist to a good friend ("cher et vénéré ami"). Avignon, 25 February, 1867. 4 pp. In French, thanking his friend for the organization of his "petite séance," speaking of his student Graff and of Messrs. Aubert and Taufenberger, indicating that he had chosen Graff for his second violin and making clear that this has caused some tentions ("je suis froissé de la prétention Auberts"). He continues at length on these matters, finally stating "Assez" and moving on to note, in another vein, that there are many piano accompaniments for The Devil's Trill [Tartini], but that the best one has been published in Frankfurt by André. Rare large AMQS from the important violinist and influential pedagogue, teacher of Elman, Heifetz, Milstein, Zimbalist, Parlow, Schumsky and many others! A large oblong sheet with hand-ruled staves along the left side, the top line inscribed with a line from the first movement of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, signed and inscribed beneath to the German conductor and wine merchant, Henry Ettling, and dated London, 31 May, 1906. On the right side of the sheet is a mat window framing a slightly trimmed original cabinet photograph of a seated Auer holding an umbrella, with a young Mischa Elman, who had begun studying with him just four years prior, at the age of 11.
