Signed Letter about Her Dancing Career

Fascinating letter from the dancer who, along with Vernon Castle, significantly influenced dance style of the times. April 29, 1932. 2pp, signed "Irene C. Mc Laughlin." An important letter in which Castle discusses in some detail her dancing career with Vernon and some of the particular dances that were then popular. Together with a retained copy of the letter of inquiry from Mark Sullivan. Two sheets of personal stationery with printed letterhead (10.5" x 7.25" ). In fine condition, with usual folds ans paper clip stains, as well as a few pencil notations on the upper right side of the first page of the stationery written by Mark Sullivan for inclusion in his files and in his book "Our Times". A heartfelt and moving ALS from the notorious demimondaine, the celebrated beautiful dancer who left the world of ballet for the Folies Bergere, was mistress to King Léopold II and was painted and celebrated by Lautrec, Muller and Klimt. 1 1/2 pp. 8vo. To the music critic Victorin de Joncières (1839-1903), dated "Mercredi 5 Juillet, 1899," on black-bordered mourning stationery. "...I have an immense sadness having lost my dear mother who I so loved; it is the most cruel bad fortune which could have befallen me..."

Autograph letter from the Italian composer of more than 600 songs, including the celebrated "Funiculi funicula." 19 Feb., 1887. 4 pp. In French, with complete typed transcription. Friendly content, even a bit flirtatious, evidently to a former female student, joking about calling her "Mad.elle," noting "what an egoist I am!," fondly recalling their time in Nice and lamenting that he is too occupied presently in London except to depart in August and September, asking if she might visit the "foggy country," perhaps in the spring, and noting that he is sending her some of his Songs of May. Robert Goulet (1933-2007) was an American singer and actor. He originated the role of Lancelot in the 1960 Broadway musical Camelot and made numerous appearances in Las Vegas.

TLS, one page, 8.25 x 10.75, personal letterhead, 11 June 1931, to Mr. Wattenberg. Claiming that he has "no source of income from England where the tax is not already taken off." Sullivan writes to a Mr. Day, in part: "I hope you received the music safely...I cannot get a harp part of "St. Agnes' Eve" and unless Miss Abell has one, I do not know what we can do.
