Original photograph showing "the path of a steel ball ejected vertically from a moving object," by the important and influential American photographer, together with the original model train used in the photograph, a copy of Berenice Abbott: Documenting Science, in which the photograph is reproduced, and a notarized letter describing the provenance of the model train which belonged to J. Eric Little, a young relative of the MIT physicist Dr. Elbert Little who assisted Abbott with the project. Gelatin silver print photograph signed at the lower right on the photographer's mount, stamped by the photographer on the verso mount. The photograph has been professionally restored, with surface losses inpainted and the gloss immediately around those areas adjusted to more closely resemble the gloss of the original. 19.25 x 9 inches, mount and frame 30 x 24 inches.  Read More...

Signed copy of the seventeenth edition of this multimedia monthly.  Comb-bound in color pictorial printed wrappers.  Nine leaves (unpaginated), with 6 flexi disc records bound in (as published).  Inscription by the Italian violinist, then nineteen years old, to fol. 7 recto, which features a brief article on him by Roger de Roquancourt.  Almost square format, 7.25 x 7.5 inches (18.5 x 19 cm).  Small ink stain to back cover; else in very good condition. His Etui and a small Papercut Figure

A finely made etui, bone with black lacquered decoration and mounted with gilded metal, understood to have belonged to the beloved Danish author best known for such classic fairy tales as “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Red Shoes,” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” Enclosed is a handwritten note in an early unidentified hand reading "Hans Christian Andersens Etui" and "Harboe" to verso, along with a small paper cut of a bull, apparently accomplished by the author.  Etui measures 2.5 x 5 x .5 inches (6.5 x 13 x 1.5 cm.). "La muette de Portici" Tobacco Box, Ca. 1830s

A rare circular tobacco box, [Germany?],  ca. 1830, the cover depicting a scene identified at the illustration base as "Die Stume von Portici 3e Act 3e Scène," which  8.4 diameter, 2.2 cm high. La muette de Portici is an opera in five acts by Daniel Auber, with a libretto by Germain Delavigne, revised by Eugène Scribe. The work has an important place in musical history, as it is generally regarded as the earliest French grand opera. La muette was revived in Paris immediately after the French July Revolution of 1830. Later, at a performance of this opera at the Théâtre de la Monnaie, Brussels on 25 August 1830, a riot broke out during the patriotic and revolutionary duet "Amour sacré de la patrie" that became the signal for the Belgian Revolution, which led to Belgian independence. Richard Wagner remarked, in his 1871 Reminiscences of Auber, that the opera "whose very representation had brought [revolutions] about, was recognized as an obvious precursor of the July Revolution, and seldom has an artistic product stood in closer connection with a world-event." The scene depicted on the present item is the Finale of Act 3, in which Alphonse’s body-guard Selva tries to rearrest Fenella and Masaniello succeeds in getting the townspeople to revolt in order to stop him and free his sister.

Three Ballooning Flyers, 1838 - 1845

A intriguing group of three ballooning flyers advertising the United Kingdom's most famous balloonist of the 19th century. Experimenting with coal gas as a cheaper and more readily available alternative to hydrogen for lifting power, Green's first ascent was in a coal gas balloon on 19 July 1821 and he had made 200 ascents by 1835.  In 1836, he set a major long distance record in the balloon Royal Vauxhall, flying overnight from Vauxhall Gardens in London to Weilburg, Duchy of Nassau (Germany), a distance of 480 miles (770 km). By the time he retired in 1852, he had flown in a balloon more than 500 times. The present broadsides are all very rare, with only a few recorded similar examples in WorldCat. Certificate Awarding the Composer the Governor's Citation

Original certificate awarding the important American composer the Governor's Citation of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Dated September 22, 1971 and signed by Governor Milton J. Shapp and Secretary of the Commonwealth C. Delores Tucker. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Barber studied at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and maintained a close link to the city throughout his life. The composer's name is hand-lettered and a gold seal with purple ribbons is affixed at the foot. One slight chip to the edge and mounting remnants on the verso; overall in fine condition. 11 x 14 inches (28 x 35.7 cm).

Original program from an orchestral concert given at Buckingham Palace on May 21, 1841, featuring an early performance of Beethoven's Wellington's Victory (Grand Battle Sinfonia) and addressed by hand to the important English conductor of Beethoven's works, George Smart. The program lists works by Beethoven, Cimarosa, Mendelssohn, Strauss, and Spohr, concluding with the Grand Battle Sinfonia, which commemorates Wellington's victory at the battle of Vitoria in 1813. Sir George Smart, a guest at this occasion, had been the first to conduct the work in England about 20 years earlier. Printed on p. 1 of a bifolium and addressed to Smart on p. 3. Printed dinner invitation card from the Scottish-born inventor to Robert Simpson Woodward (1849–1924), President of the Carnegie Institute, with the purpose of the dinner, "To meet the Board of Managers of the National Geographic Society," neatly penned in an unknown hand above the body of the invitation, which reads "Mr. Alexander Graham Bell / requests the pleasure of / President Woodward's / company at dinner / Thursday February 20 /  at seven thirty o'clock. / 1331 Connecticut Avenue."  No year given, presumed ca. 1897 - 1903.
