23383. [Ballooning] Green, Charles. (1785 - 1870).
Three Ballooning Flyers, 1838 - 1845

A intriguing group of three ballooning flyers advertising the United Kingdom's most famous balloonist of the 19th century. Experimenting with coal gas as a cheaper and more readily available alternative to hydrogen for lifting power, Green's first ascent was in a coal gas balloon on 19 July 1821 and he had made 200 ascents by 1835.  In 1836, he set a major long distance record in the balloon Royal Vauxhall, flying overnight from Vauxhall Gardens in London to Weilburg, Duchy of Nassau (Germany), a distance of 480 miles (770 km). Original 1825 broadside from the Königstädtisches Theater in Berlin, advertising the plays Das Osterwasser by Julius Eberwein, Die Ehemänner als Junggesellen by Gaugiran-Nanteil, and Die Schneidermamsells, after Scribe with music by Louis Angely, to be performed on April 2, 1825. Original map of Hamburg, owned by the important composer and titled in his hand on the outer slipcase label "Plan von Hamburg" and with the printed title "Grundriss von Hamburg / nach dem unglücklichen Brande von 5ten May bis den 9ten 1842" ("Plan of Hamburg / after the unhappy fire of May 5th to 9th, 1842"). The map shows Brahms' birthplace, with a fold-out flap, outlined in red ink, bringing attention to the affected central area before and after the fire. An interesting signed poster from the innovative and influential American composer, bearing an especially large and bold autograph signature in red ink. Pictorial poster, framed, with plexiglass.  17 x 22 inches; 43 x 55 cm. Signed by John Cage at the bottom right of the poster, from a week-long residency at Stanford in celebration of Cage's 80th birthday. The event included an exhibition of Cage's prints, two panel discussions of his work, the delivery of an original lecture, a "Musicircus," and two evening performances of Cage's music. Read More...

Original broadside from a grand concert at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on March 11th, 1831, under the direction of Sir Henry R. Bishop. The broadside lists the complete program, which included arias by Handel, Haydn, Mozart, and others, a violin concerto by Giovanni Battista Viotti, and overtures by Spontini, Cherubini, and Rossini. The performers included the noted soprano Mary Anne Wood (née Paton), violinist Antonio James Oury, and the young organist Samuel Sebastian Wesley, who would go on to become an important composer. The broadside also announces that Handel's Messiah, with "additional accompaniments by Mozart," will be performed due to popular demand on the following Friday. Creases and rough edges, but overall in fine condition for its age. 8.25 x 16.75 inches (21.3 x 42.5 cm).

Folio (14 x 19 inch; 35 x 49 cm), spiral bound, plain boards; covers detached, generally sound internally. Together with an elaborate painted calligraphic presentation broadside (14 x 21 inch; 36 x 54 cm) of the Symphony to Albert Einstein by Sol Nodel (1951), "Symphony No. 2 'David' dedicated to Albert Einstein For his inspiration to the Jewish people and to all humanity by the composer Menahem Avidom and presented by the American Fund for Israel Institutions on the occasion of the American tour of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, January, February, March 1951," additionally inscribed by the composer in black ink upper left, "To the greatest man in our generation / Prof. A. Einstein / humbly / From the Composer / M. Avidom / Princeton 10/1/51." Together with an original 8 x 8 inch original photograph of the presentation to Einstein and a photocopy of a 1986 letter from Louise F. Sayen later presenting the score and broadside to a Mr. Benamy, noting that "Miss Margot Einstein made this gift to you in gratitude for your thoughtful help in arranging for the distribution of her father's library.  It gave her great comfort that you were the designated representative for the Friends of Hebrew University in Jerusalem." "Sailor Sweethearts" – Original Painting

Charming and unusual early 20th-century painting by an unknown artist, depicting a young sailor and his 'sweetheart' sending love notes to one another by way of messenger doves.  Oil paint on velvet cloth.  In fine condition.  Sight 35.75 x 16.5 inches (90.8 x 42 cm.); nicely framed to an overall size of 37.5 x 18 inches (95.25 x 45.7 cm.).

15901. [Lindbergh, Charles. (1902–1974)].
"Lindbergh Kidnapping, $25,000 reward" - Original Poster

Graphically striking original poster, ca. 1932, offering a $25,000 reward for the "apprehension and conviction of the kidnapers of Charles A. Lindbergh, Jr." The 18-month-old son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh was taken from their New Jersey home on 1 March 1932. A massive search, led by the New Jersey police, ensued. The poster lists the last four digits of the bills paid to the kidnappers in ransom and urges the public to contact the police if the bills are "detected". Heavily toned and in very fragile condition, with several large corner losses and tears where the poster was taped to a larger backing sheet. Housed in an archival plastic sleeve, but buyer should anticipate additional small chipping/losses during any future transfer out of its present setup. 17 x 27 inches (43 x 68.5 cm).

Collection of ten well-worn American marching protest posters from the 1960's–1970's, from groups including the All-Peoples Congress, New York newspaper unions, and the Campaign for a People's Fightback. Slogans include "KKK Racism Hurts All Poor Working People," "We Say Fight Back," "Unity is Strength," and "Strike against the New York Daily News." Sizes range from 23 x 17.5 inches to 28 x 24 inches, various materials. 

Group of 20 handbills, ca. 1967–1970, for rock performances in San Francisco, including shows by the Grateful Dead, the Mothers of Invention, Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane and other bands. The highly striking and colorful graphic designs in psychedelic style, many designed by Wes Wilson, advertise shows presented by rock impresario Bill Graham. "It Preaches, Tells Funny Stories, Sings, Plays All Kinds of Music"- Talking Machine Broadside

Printed letterpress broadside extolling the virtues of the newly invented "talking machine," Thomas Edison's phonograph, and advertising a live demonstration of the machine on November 28th of an unspecified year, ca. 1880s–1890s.  "The talking machine is one of the most wonderful inventions of the age, and is a source of wonder and delight to young and old," the copy reads.  "It preaches, tells funny stories, sings, plays all kinds of music and talks talk.  A strictly high-class entertainment."  While the majority of the broadside is printed, the specifics of the demonstration are handwritten in a combination of pen and crayon.  Occasional tearing, including a significant 9-inch diagonal tear from the left edge that has been reinforced on the verso with scotch tape, but otherwise in good condition.  12 x 16 inches (30.5 x 40.6 cm.). Scarce original concert flyer for a 1969 concert advertising "The Exciting Tamla-Motown Star" Stevie Wonder, The Foundations "Build Me Up Buttercup," and "America's Glamorous Recording Stars" The Flirtations, appearing at the Odeon Theatre in Manchester on March 19.  The booking form on the lower margin remains completely intact and blank.  An incredible and rare example of 1960s Motown ephemera.  Mild toning throughout, with trifold creasing; overall in fine condition.  5.7 x 11.4 inches (14.5 x 29.8 cm.).

Ca. 1870 Variety Show Broadside featuring "The Chileno Wonder," "The Great Colored Commedian" & "The Champion Pianist of his Age"

Rare original broadside dating from ca. 1870, advertising a variety show with the talents of acrobat "Master Alejo Hudson, the Chileno Wonder," "Charles Love, The Great Colored Commedian [sic]," and "Master Jose Fernandez, the Champion Pianist of his age." Hudson went on to join the Luproil's Circus in 1879; Charles Love had appeared with the Original Georgia Minstrels in the 1860's. In delicate condition with folds and wear to the creases, mounting remnants, and irregularly trimmed edges, but with no tears and overall good. 12 x 8 inches (30.2 x 20.6 cm).

Attractive design in pink, silver, and black by the German graphic artist Ludwig Hohlwein, printed by Fritz Maison of Munich.
