1. Ansermet, Ernst. (1883-1969). (Click on image for full-size version)
Early Signed Photograph.
A rare early signed photograph from the conductor who from 1915 to 1923 was conductor for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe. This remarkable original photograph was signed and inscribed by Ansermet in 1917, when he was only 32 years old and before he had founded the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Ansermet was closely involved with most of the leading composers of the first half of the century and during World War I, he met Stravinsky and began a lifelong association with Russian music. When the present photograph was signed, Ansermet had yet to conduct the premieres for which he is best remembered, including Stravinsky's "Histoire du Soldat" (1918), "Pulcinella" (1920), "Les Noces" (1923) or De Falla's "The Three-Cornered Hat." (1919).

One heavy horizontal crease across image, priced accordingly. Signed additionally by the photographer and mounted to 16 X 24 cm overall.

Paris: C. Carrington, 1898. First edition. Limited edition, 1/500. 8vo, orig. pink/purple silk; corners & spine ends scuffed. With 7 copper plate engravings by Adolphe Lalauze.

Arnould's "performance in sacred music impressed the royal family and Mme de Pompadour, and she was appointed to the Opéra, studying declamation with Clairon and singing with Marie Fel. Her voice was sweet and expressive, not powerful, supported by fine diction and acting. She was the leading Opéra soprano from 1757 (début in Mouret’s Les amours des dieux) to 1778. She sang over 30 roles, by Lully, Rameau, Rousseau (Le devin du village) and others; several she created, but her greatest was Telaira in Rameau’s Castor et Pollux." (Grove Online) $45.00

3. Artôt, Désirée. (1835-1907). (Click on image for full-size version)
Rare Autograph Letter, mentioning a performance for the Queen of Russia.
Interesting letter, dated February 22, 1862. Artôt rejects an invitation to sing in Vienna and details her busy concert schedule. In particular, she explains that she will soon leave England for Berlin where she has been called to perform for the Queen of Russia at the opera house and at court concerts. 3 pages.

The great Belgian Soprano studied with Viardot before going on to win acclaim throughout Europe as one of the greats of her era. On Meyerbeer's recommendation, she starred at the Paris Opera and appeared regularly in Italy, Germany, and England. In 1868 she went to Russia and became friends with Tchaikovsky, who eventually proposed marriage to her. She rejected him and - with tragic consequences - he married another, later saying that Artot was the only woman he ever wanted to marry. Artot eventually married baritone Mariano Padilla and together they produced the soprano Lola Artot de Padilla. $185.00

4. Auer, Leopold. (1845-1930). (Click on image for full-size version -- additional photos available)
Autograph Letter and Photograph.
A scarce ALS from the important violinist and influential pedagogue, teacher of Elman, Heifetz, Milstein, Zimbalist, Parlow, Schumsky and many others! 3 integral pages, pen doodles in same ink on fourth (otherwise black) conjoined sheet. In French, to the composer Alexander Sergeievich Taneyev (1850 - 1918), regarding the premiere of one of his works. Sold together with a fine original doubleweight 8X10 portrait by Mishkin.

Leopold Auer spent nearly fifty years in St. Petersburg and exerted a decisive influence on the Russian violin school, following Vieuxtemps and Wieniawski as solo violin at the Imperial Ballet. Arensky, Glazunov, Taneyev and Tchaikovsky wrote their most important violin compositions for him. As for Tschaikovsky’s violin concerto, Auer refused the dedication, declaring it technically awkward and too long! After a few revisions to the violin part, he eventually played this monumental violin work in 1893, shortly before the composer’s death.

12. Beethoven, Ludwig van. (1770-1827). (Click on image for full-size version)
Ouverture aus der Oper Fidelio, für das Forte-Piano.
Wien: Artaria und Comp., [1814]. First edition. Oblong folio. Title; 1 - 8 pp. Engraved. [PN] 2327. First edition of the first published piano reduction by Moscheles, as supervised by the composer himself. In later marbled wrappers, margins moderately soiled, small hole in margin of title page, bottom edge a little rough, but overall very good. Kinsky p. 183.

In his introduction to the English edition of Schindler's 'Life of Beethoven," Ignaz Moscheles writes: "It was in the year 1814, when Artaria undertook to publish a piano-forte arrangement of Beethoven's 'Fidelio,' that he asked the composer whether I might be permitted to make it: Beethoven assented, upon condition that he should see my arrangement of each of the pieces, before it was given into the engraver's hands. Nothing could be more welcome to me, since I looked upon this as the long wished-for opportunity to approach nearer to the great man, and to profit by his remarks and corrections. During my frequent visits, the number of which I tried to multiply by all possible excuses, he treated me with the kindest indulgence. Although his increasing deafness was a considerable hindrance to our conversation, yet he gave me many instructive hints, and even played to me such parts as he wished to have arranged in a particular manner for the piano-forte." $375.00

Ideas of Order.
Boston: 1952. First edition. Vintage oversize dyeline full orchestral score, 13 X 17 inches. 66 pp. Dedicated to Dimitri Mitropoulos.

An unusual score from the influential American composer, critic and teacher, one of the first to write about Charles Ives and the first to write a book on the music of Aaron Copland. "Ideas of Order" was commissioned in 1952 by conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos, who gave its premiere with the New York Philharmonic the following year. The composer writes:
"The title [of Ideas of Order] reflects a devotion to the American poet Wallace Stevens, which dates back to my days as a graduate student in music at Harvard in the mid-1930's. It was around the time that his second book, 'Ideas of Order', was published by Alfred A. Knopf. Since my work for Mitropoulos was neither program music nor in any standard form, I sought a neutral name like Composition and thought of almost everything that is common to all music, including an 'order of tones' when I remember Stevens. In his 'Ideas of Order', poet and musician are identified in their quest for ordered arrangement within the realm of imagination as a mode of relief, if only momentary, from our daily involvement with experience ... I sympathize with the motives he attributes to 'Requiring an order beyond speech' -- an order not to be confused with political order, which is its exact antithesis....There is, then, nothing more literal in the connection between the poem and my music than the assumption that as a musician my aim is to order tones. I have done so in this through permutations of three notes that serve not as a motif but as guideposts for choice of melodic lines and harmonies." $125.00
