Gelatin silver print by the great American photographer of Mae West posing alongside Mr. America, Mr. Dick Dubois, 1954, with whom she appeared (as well as with 8 other "muscle boys"!) in Las Vegas singing "The Strongest Men in the World." Original period print, cropped from the original full format image.  Unfortunately marred by significant ink stains across several areas, with small pinholes in each corner and some wear to the margins, but nevertheless quite striking. Some pencil notations on the verso, unstamped. 10.5 x 11.25 inches.

Softcover.  8vo.  47 pp. plus signed limitation page, hand numbered by the author 441 from the edition of 500.  Pale green paper covers contained in the original yellow paper wrappers, all slightly toned but otherwise in fine condition; block split from cover along rear gutter with glue remnants visible along front and rear gutters.  Several gatherings uncut.  Overall a crisp, beautiful copy.  Signed bilingual edition, translated by Roland Penrose and Mesens with illustrations by the author, including numerous poems concerning music, such as "La partition compléte / The Complete Score," accompanied by a two-page illustration of five staves covered in unusual key signatures and objects.  Another poem "Le clavecin bien tamponné / de Jean Sébastien Bach / Entièrement Fait a la main / par l'artiste / en personne," appears with an illustration of a hand playing the piano. [viii], 880, [viii] pp. With a fine frontispiece engraving depicting a winged female figure playing the keyboard with three seated cherubs playing a viol, violin and recorder seated around her. Binding worn, front board and endpage starting to separate but still relatively solid, brass remnants on board edges, apparently lacking original clasps, early ownernship markings ("Joh. Jakob Widler...Wiedikon / 1781") and remnants of wax seals to inner boards and endpages. Overall a fine copy of this important work by the Swiss composer and music pedagogue. Read More...
