223. [Literature & Art] Ambrosi, Gustinus. (1893-1975).
Two Autograph Letters

Two very interesting early autograph letters from the Austrian sculptor and poet, regarding his artistic and literary pursuits. The first letter (2 pp.; January 10, 1913) is addressed to a Herr Specht (perhaps the Viennese poet Richard Specht) and expresses Ambrosi's gratitude for Specht's support after an unfavorable review. The second letter (3 pp.; February 8, 1923), written in Ambrosi's remarkable calligraphic hand and addressed to Viennese scholar Max Pirker, expresses at length Ambrosi's feelings about his "true work," poetry (his first volume of poetry was published in 1923) and his gratitude for Pirker's recognition, going on to expound on his thoughts on nature, spirituality, death, and the importance of living in the present. An important pair of letters from the artist recognized as a significant portraitist of the twentieth century. On two bifolia, the first of translucent paper with toning, the second of heavier paper; some edge wear and folding creases, but overall in fine condition. 6.25 x 8.75 inches (15.8 x 22.2 cm) and 6.75 x 8.75 inches (17.3 x 22.4 cm). 228. [Literature & Art] [Dada] Löhner-Beda, Fritz. (1883-1942) & Hajós, Karl. (1889-1950) & Ortmann, Wolfgang. (1885-1967).
"Dadaistische Fox-Trot" - Original Sheet Music

Berlin: Berliner Bohème-Verlag K. Brüll. 1920. Dada, dadaistischer Fox-trot für Trottel und Solche - die es noch werden Wollen. Worte von DaDa Beda. Musik von Ober-DaDa Hajós. ("Dada, dadaistic foxtrot for fools and those who want to become fools. Words by DaDa Beda. Music by Arch-DaDa Hajos.") An extremely rare song parodying the Dada movement, with music by the Hungarian composer Karl Hajos and lyrics by Fritz Löhner-Beda, one of the most famous Viennese songwriters of his time, and graphically striking illustrated wrappers by Wolfgang Ortmann. The nonsense lyrics poke fun at the absurdist use of language in Dada and at the movement's cult status: the beginning of the chorus translates as "Dada, O holy Dada, O loudmouthed Dada, hear my prayer." Published in 1920, coinciding with the First International Dada Fair in Berlin, the song must have appealed to Berliners who found the movement's gatherings and publications bizarre and amusing. Upright folio. 6 pp. Toned, spine reinforced internally with paper tape, two small early tape repairs to inside front cover with resultant staining, lower edges lightly chipped.  Read More...

234. [Literature & Art] Field, Eugene. (1850 - 1895).
Archive of Autograph Poems and Documents, including an unpublished manuscript fable

Fascinating archive of lesser-known poems, proofs, and other documents by the beloved American poet, humor writer and journalist, the "poet of childhood" best known for his light-hearted poems for children, among the most famous of which are "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," "The Duel" and "Little Boy Blue."  The present archive consisting primarily of holograph manuscripts in his precise and minuscule hand, many with beautiful small illuminated initials and ink drawings.  Besides the unpublished fable Yuytot, many of the poems are on one of Field's favorite themes, bibliomania -- a malady of which he made no secret.  Field's passion for book collecting comes through in several poems about bibliophiles (and their long-suffering wives), his Latin and English epitaph for a fellow collector, and in two numbers of his long-running "Sharps and Flats" column in the Chicago Daily News.  Many of the documents date from shortly before Field's untimely death at age 45 in 1895.
