Original program for a performance of the great Hungarian composer and pianist at the Teatro La Fenica on April 8, 1939, signed on an internal page next to his image by Bartók. Bartók performed with his second wife, pianist Ditta Pásztory-Bartók, in a program which included the Rhapsody for Piano and Orchesta, op. 1, and the Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion. In fine condition, with foxing to the covers and light handling wear. 5.5 x 7.5 inches.

"Litany for Bassoon and Piano" - Autograph Musical Score

Autograph manuscript of the Russian-born composer's Litany for bassoon and piano, written for the prominent American bassoonist Leonard Sharrow. Black ink on 17 loose blue-print sheets, pages numbered in pencil; changes have been made on pp. 5 (notes changed in pencil), 14 (small deletions cut out), 16 (tempo marking changed in pen), and 17 (small square cut out). In very fine condition overall. Rare. One photocopy of the holograph score is held at the SUNY Buffalo Library, but the work is apparently unpublished.  Read More...

With one folding plate ("Tablature du Basson") including two illustrations of the bassoon and additional illustrations accompanying textual commentary at conclusion. Rare. [4], ii, 145 p. illus., 1 foldout plate. Two later labels on the title page, of "Lippi, Luthier," and "Jean-Baptiste Laprevotte, Facteur d'Orgues et de Serinettes," partially obscuring the original publisher's imprint. Blue paper boards with handwritten front label. Heavy overall wear and tears to the boards and spine; volume slightly warped. Area of damp staining to the lower edge of the pages throughout, especially strong on the folding plate. 1841 Buckingham Palace Concert Program - THE COPY OF GEORGE SMART

Original program from an orchestral concert given at Buckingham Palace on May 21, 1841, featuring an early performance of Beethoven's Wellington's Victory (Grand Battle Sinfonia) and addressed by hand to the important English conductor of Beethoven's works, George Smart. The program lists works by Beethoven, Cimarosa, Mendelssohn, Strauss, and Spohr, concluding with the Grand Battle Sinfonia, which commemorates Wellington's victory at the battle of Vitoria in 1813. Sir George Smart, a guest at this occasion, had been the first to conduct the work in England about 20 years earlier. Printed on p. 1 of a bifolium and addressed to Smart on p. 3. Score to the composer's twelve-tone suite for string quartet, signed with a long inscription to Jeanne Dubost, the hostess of the salon where the piece was premiered. 12mo (18.3 x 13.4 cm). 83 pp. Inscription translated from the German: "To Madame Dubost, Even more than the fact that the first performance of this suite and of the songs took place in your wonderful salon on March 22, 1928, I will never forget that through this I and my art -- until now foreign to France -- have found a home in Paris. For this I will be grateful all my life. Alban Berg." Spine somewhat split, scattered stains and light toning to wrappers, overall very good with the signed page partly creased, else fine. November 10, [1846.] Translated from the French: "My dear Duveyrier, You were kind enough to promise to print a short advertisement in your publications. I sent it to you 4 or 5 days ago. Don't forget; you are doing me a great favor. Yours, H. Berlioz." 1 p. 12mo, single-sheet folded with conjugate address leaf. Stamped at the left: November 13, 1846. Folding creases, some smudges and unrelated pen marks at the left, with an older sales label at the head of the letter. A fine signature and overall in very good condition. 8.25 x 5.25 inches (21 x 13.3 cm).

Autograph letter from the German critic and translator, the self-declared voice of Wagner, Liszt, Berlioz and other progressive musicians of the New German School. Dated Weimar, May 18, 1863. Writing to the cantor, organist and composer Alexander Gottschalg, he asks him to send him "the Berlioz piano reduction as soon as possible," because he will need to use it in the coming week, and continues: "Time is short, because I want to leave Weimar next week, and so it is doubtful, if I will be able to come to Denstädt with you..." 1 p. on a biofolium, addressed and with original postmark and wax seal remnants on the verso. 14. Bernier, Nicolas. (1665-1734).
Cantates de Bernier - Copyist Manuscript

A handsomely bound volume of copyist manuscripts of secular cantatas by the French Baroque composer known as one of the creators of the French cantata genre. The volume contains four solo and duo cantatas, some with violin. The first of the four cantatas does not appear in literature on Bernier and may be the work of a Regnauld or Rignauld.  Contents as follows: La Vengeance (for solo alto and violin on a text by Jean-Baptiste Rousseau titled "Les Filets de Vulcain", 31 pp.); Bacchus (for solo bass and violin, published in Bernier's fourth volume of cantatas in 1703, 33 pp.); Iris et Daphné (for two sopranos, published as Les Nimphes de Diane in 1703, 37 pp.); and Jupiter et Europe (for soprano and bass with two violins, also published in Bernier's fourth volume of cantatas, 51 pp.) All cantatas are written in a bold, clear hand throughout, with some evidence of more than one copyist's hand. Full brown leather with gilt decoration to the spine and edges of the boards, partially worn off; spine label reads "Canta de Berni." Marbled endpapers. In one photograph Bernstein is shown speaking at a podium while Copland listens; in the other, Bernstein kisses Schuman on the cheek while Copland looks on smiling. 8 x 10 inches. Typed Letter Signed to "Pult und Taktstock" Magazine

An interested typed letter signed from the Swiss-born American composer, known for his compositions inspired by Jewish music and for his tenure as director of the Cleveland Institute of Music. October 4, 1924. On letterhead of the Cleveland Institute, Bloch writes to the editors of the Austrian magazine for conductors "Pult und Taktstock" ("Music stand and Baton"), declining to write an article because he is busy, but hoping that "in the future sometime I shall be able to send you something. In the meantime I want to tell you that I agree fully with your splendid ideas. It is very important that all striving musicians of the world should come in contact with one another." Hole-punched, with some notes in colored pencil at the foot; overall in fine condition. 6 x 9.5 inches (15.2 x 24 cm).

19. Bloch, Ernest. (1880-1959).
Autograph Signature

A boldly signed autograph clipped from the bottom of a letter from the important Swiss-born American composer of Jewish ancestry, who studied violin with Ysaye in Brussels and whose most famous work is "Schelomo" for Cello and Orchestra. The letter from which this was clipped was apparently addressed to the violinist Joseph Szigeti, as this is from his collection. A later hand has dated the signature May 7, 1925, in red pencil. One crease; overall in fine condition. 8 x 2.25 inches (20.5 x 6 cm).
