Autograph Signatures and Original Photograph

Clipped autograph signatures from both halves of the Victorian theatrical partnership known for their fourteen comic operas, librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan.  Together with an original photograph of Sullivan and four further modern reproduction images, three of Sullivan and one of Gilbert.  On two small slips cut from larger documents; Gilbert's signature has apparently been taken from a letter and includes a closing greeting.  Mounting remnants on the verso of the photograph; otherwise in very fine condition.  Signatures 9.3 x 3.4 cm and 6.5 x 2.6 cm; original photograph 8.3 x 12.3 cm.

Striking signed photograph of the American stage and film actress and original member of the Ziegfeld Follies, in her role as Gaby Gaufrette in The Little Café (1913).  Dawn appears in a fur-trimmed robe and butterfly headdress, and has signed "Best wishes from Hazel Dawn."  The photographer has signed lower left as Geisler & Baumann, New York.  Very slight wear to the edges and mounting remnants on the verso; otherwise in very fine condition.  22 x 25.3 cm.

Original press photograph ca. 1945-7 of the American conductor and composer showing off new gloves to Krasner, the renowned American violinist who premiered the violin concertos of Alban Berg and Arnold Schoenberg and who was a close associate of Webern.  Bernstein conducted the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra for two seasons in 1945 and 1947, when Krasner was concertmaster of the orchestra. A charming image of the young Bernstein and his older colleague, with very slight creasing, else in fine condition.  20 x 25 cm.

39. [Opera] Albani, Emma. (1847-1930).
Autograph Signature

Autograph of the leading soprano of the late 19th to early 20th centuries, and the first Canadian singer to rise to international prominence.  Albani appeared in New York and London, and was a favorite of Queen Victoria.  She has signed on an album leaf, dated 1889.  On the same leaf, two further signatures from one Charlie Reed, dated Boston, April 2nd 1889, and on the verso, from one Francis Mcclean, dated Boston, October 6th, 1888.  In very fine condition.  18.8 x 11.8 cm.

46. [Opera] Geistinger, Marie. (1836-1903).
Autograph Signature

Autograph signature from the Austrian actress and singer known as "The Queen of Operetta."  After great success in Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg, and Riga, Geistinger made seven successful tours in the USA in the years 1880 to 1884, from which time this signature comes.  Dated Baltimore, April 27, 1883.  On an album leaf with slight discoloration and wear to the edges; otherwise in very fine condition.  18.6 x 11.5 cm.

Autograph signatures of the great American actress known for her Shakespearean performances and from her first husband, actor Robert Taber.  Taber joined Marlowe's company as the leading man in 1888, and the two had a rocky marriage from 1894 to 1900.  The two have signed the title page from an edition of As You Like It, Marlowe with the line "Nay, you must call me Rosalind," and Taber with the line "Orlando, my liege."  Dated January 1893.  Slight chipping to the edges; otherwise in fine condition.  9.8 x 15 cm.

Signed image of the Austrian tenor, the "King of Bel Canto" and one of the greatest singers of the twentieth century.  Tauber has signed on an image of himself cut out in the shape of a star.  Dated 1932.  Chips and creases to the edges; otherwise in fine condition.  Approx. 12 x 13 cm.

Autograph signature of the great American entertainer (playwright, composer, lyricist, actor, singer, dancer, and producer!)  Cohan has signed on a small album leaf, and a small newspaper clipping of his face has been pasted below.  Dated February 16, 1937.  On the verso, another signature from an unidentified actor (Ernest ?) dated January 16, 1937.  Slight wear to the edges and mounting remnants; otherwise in fine condition.  12.6 x 11 cm.

Typed Letter with Secretarial Signature

Typed letter with secretarial signature from the British-American screen legend and public figure, thanking a friend for his letter and "most thoughtful comments... I was pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit to THE LITTLE FOXES."  Taylor's appearance in The Little Foxes in 1981 was her first substantial stage role.  On letterhead with Taylor's name from her sixth marriage, Elizabeth Taylor Warren.  A color image of Taylor has been mounted to the upper right corner.  Letter creases; otherwise in very fine condition.  15.8 x 17.7 cm.

19. Fall, Leo. (1873-1925).
Signed Photograph

Original cabinet photograph signed by the Austrian composer of operettas, including The Dollar Princess and Madame Pompadour.  Fall is shown in profile, looking down through his pince-nez, and has signed elegantly in the corner: Leo Fall, Vienna, May 12, 1908.  The photograph is embossed with the year, 1908, and presented on the original mount from Hofatelier Gebrüder Hirsch, Mannheim.  On the verso, a newspaper clipping of Fall's obituary (in German) has been mounted, and Fall's birth and death dates written in pen. Some scratches and wear to the surface of the image, otherwise in fine condition.  10.6 x 16.4 cm.  Scarce.

Enormous mounted oval 10.5 x 13.5 albumen photo of the Norwegian violinist often called Norway’s first international star, affixed to its original 13 x 18 mount, prominently signed and inscribed in black ink in German and dated March 28, 1870. Framed to an overall size of 18 x 23. Light dampstaining evident to lower left (slightly affecting the inscription area), light scattered soiling, and a thin slice to the left side of the image, otherwise fine condition.

Magnificent 3.25 x 5.25 postcard photo of the famed Russian pianist and composer, signed in crisp black ink, “Sergei Rachmaninoff, 2. II. 14, London.” In fine condition, with light silvering to borders and a bit of light contrast to signature against dark portions of the image. A striking, early portrait of the accomplished pianist and composer.


Rachmaninoff performed at the Royal Albert Hall on February 1, 1914, as a part of an eight-concert tour of England

10. Britten, Benjamin. (1913–1976).
Early Signed Photograph & Autograph Letter saying "it is difficult to do justice to my classic features!"

Signed original 8 x 10 inch photograph of the young English composer, conductor and pianist, inscribed and signed in 1941 at the age of 28, to Charles V. Foreman and sold together with a 1-page ALS ("Benjamin Britten") on the letterhead of Dr. Mayer, M.D. (Britten and his partner, Peter Pears, lived with the Mayer family during their American stay), stating that (in part) "I have been most horribly busy since I got back from my very pleasant stay in the middle-west" and that "I enclose a photo - not a very good one I'm afraid, but it is difficult to do justice to my classic features." He goes on to note that "I enjoyed working with you all so very much...tell them I hope to back in Chicago with you all when this war is all over. I expect to leave for England in a week or so." Both items in fine condition, some very minor wrinkling to the photograph which also seems to have been somewhat light exposed in the upper half.
