In 1881, Henschel became the Boston Symphony Orchestra's first conductor. In 1884, he returned to England and was professor of singing at the Royal College of Music, London. A close friend of Brahms, he was a man of many musical talents, a great conductor, composer, and baritone.

TLS from the eminent Russian conductor, composer and double-bass virtuoso. One page, letterhead of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. January 18, 1935. To Louis Persinger, thanking him for "writing to let me know about your young pupil Gloria Perkins" and saying that he "shall look forward to give an audition to this young artist during one of my future visits to New York." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Originates from the collection of American violinist and pianist Louis Persinger (1887–1966), who trained at the Leipzig Conservatory and later taught at Juilliard, mentoring the likes of Yehudi Menuhin, Ruggiero Ricci, and Isaac Stern.

An unusual original photograph of the great French conductor, shown clowning around with Antoinette Frederksen, wife of the composer and cellist Sigurd Frederiksen (1881 - 1965), principal cellist of the Carl Rosa Opera Company and later of the Cincinnati Symphony, Detroit Symphony and LA Philharmonic. Monteux has signed and inscribed the photograph "To Antoinette - in remembrance of a foolish intermission during a very serious rehearsal!! / with much sympathy / Pierre Monteux / Hollywood Bowl / July 1927." Somewhat light ink adhesion to the signature, else fine. 6 x 8 inches [15 x 20 cm].
