An unusual image of the Austrian-born American conductor who led the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1962 -1969. He is shown in this 1979 photograph with Giorgio Tozzi as they greet each other at playback of their "Barber of Seville." 10 x 8 inches, signed boldly in black ink with his name alone. Lower right corner chipped, creases to margin of left corner, else fine.


During his tenure with the BSO, they produced many recordings for RCA, but it was a period marked also by controversy, as he occasionally clashed with musicians and administrators. On November 22, 1963, during a Boston Symphony concert, Leinsdorf had to announce the reports of President John F. Kennedy's assassination in Dallas, Texas to a shocked audience. He and the orchestra followed the news with a performance of the Funeral March from Beethoven's third symphony. (11183)
