Large original watercolor and ink drawing, ca. 1830, a satire based Edward William Clay's 'Life in Philadelphia', with a black man serenading a black woman, who plays a guitar. Both are dressed à la mode, the man sings "Take Away, Take Away," which in the original printed caption continued "Take away, take away dose rosy lips [...] Dat is bery fine, Mr Mortimer; - you sing quite con a moor, as de Italians say!!" 12 x 15 inches [30.5 x 38 cm]. Modern 1/4 calf; title heavily soiled and rubbed, trimmed and mounted, varying soiling and foxing, dampstaining in gutters in second half of volume, penultimate leaf rehinged and remargined. Published around half a century after the first edition, this is a notable publication in the history of the Bach revival at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The Telephone and Address Book of Samuel Barber

The address book of the American composer, one of the most celebrated of the 20th century. Over 80 pages, 8vo, written in a Rubrica telefonica by Gucci, the typed section 39 pages, the autograph additions 44 pages (loose), ring-bound, 1960s and 1970s, lacking covers. The typed section listing mainly people and services in New York, with extensive additional autograph sections in black ink for Munich, Rome, Spoleto, Venice and elsewhere, some entries deleted, the names including Arroyo, Bernstein, Browning, Copland, William Crawford, Martha Graham, Pamela Harriman, Hans Heinsheimer, Horowitz, Manfred Ibel, Christa Ludwig, Menotti, Menuhin, Ormandy, Leontyne Price, Serkin, Styron, Tippett, Visconti, Vidal and many others, together with restaurants, musicians, memoranda about Shostakovich and Rostropovich, and his bank account details.

Printed bifold 1962 invitation to the Birthday Party of British-American poet W.H. Auden, addressed in Auden's hand to "Mr. Samuel Barber" at the head in ink and annotated by Barber in pencil with musical rhythms and some calculations on the verso, the inside being blank and thus easily displayed open so both sides are visible. Signed National Association of Performing Artists Membership Form

Elusive signed document from the renowned Russian-born American virtuoso pianist, celebrated for his legendary speed and finger dexterity. On 2 April 1951, Barere suffered a cerebral hemorrhage during a performance of Grieg's Piano Concerto at Carnegie Hall, with Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra. Unusual signed original Piccagliani photograph of the great baritone whose career was tragically cut short by throat cancer. A boldly signed photograph from his first and only performances of Rolando in Verdi's rarely heard opera "La battaglia di Legnano" at La Scala in December of 1961. 10.5 x 15.5 cm. Very fine.

Autograph letter, 1 p. 9 May, 1926, from the German pianist, a student of Liszt who later counted Wilhelm Furtwangler among his own students. Concerning the 100th anniversary of Beethoven's Death ("Feier des 100. Todestages Beethovens"), sold together with a vintage postcard photograph and a 1921 single sheet recital program. Letter with usual folds, else fine.

17. Berger, Francesco. (1834 - 1933).
Autograph Signature

Autograph signature of the English-born pianist and composer of Italian parentage, who studied with Moscheles, was a close friend of Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins and who is mostly remembered as the untiring honorary secretary of the Philharmonic Society for twenty seven years, where he oversaw the introduction of many new works including by Elgar and Mackenzie and on several occasions brought Tchaikovsky over to conduct his own works. "Francesco Berger / aged 98" on a small card dated July, 1932, 8 x 5.5 cm, tipped to a larger page inscribed in another hand "With compliments" and baring his London address. A rare signature.

"Promenade en mer" - Autograph Musical Quotation

A beautifully penned lengthy AMQS, signed and inscribed "Souvenir amical a Mr. Wittering / Le 8 Avril 1865. Paris" from the illegitimate son of composer Charles Auguste de Beriot and Maria Malibran. A student of Thalberg, he later taught at the Paris Conservatory and counted among his pupils both Ravel and Granados. 26.5 x 16.5 cm, on paper with an attractive decorative border.
