Boito, Arrigo. (1842-1918)

Autograph Letter to Delibes mentioning "Mefistofele"

Autograph letter, 1 page, no date. Charmingly addressed to the composer Léo Delibes ("Leo de mi alma"), making plans to meet at the Hôtel de l‘Univers after a performance of his "Mephisto," the most celebrated work of the Italian composer and librettist.

Boito is remembered chiefly for his libretti for Ponchielli (La Gioconda) and Verdi (Otello and Falstaff), and for his Mefistofele, his own only completed opera. Mefistofele was premiered on 5 March 1868 at La Scala, Milan under the baton of the composer himself. After just two performances, the opera was withdrawn and was revised repeatedly until the final definitive production in Milan on 25 May 1881.

Léo Delibes (1836 - 1891)French composer of ballets, operas, and other works for the stage. His most notable works include ballets Coppélia (1870) and Sylvia (1876) as well as the operas Le roi l'a dit (1873) and Lakmé (1883). (8515)
