Typed Letter Signed regarding a musical adaptation of "La Strada"

Typed letter signed from the important Italian filmmaker to opera and film director, artist and designer Beni Montresor. 1 p., Rome, January 18, 1986. Fellini expresses his approval for Montresor's idea of adapting his 1954 film La Strada into a musical or opera, and advises him on how to proceed. Large vertical tear through the center of the sheet, repaired on the verso with masking tape, with some toning. Some notes on the verso. Overall in good condition. 7.75 x 11 inches (19.5 x 28.2 cm). Autograph Signature

Autograph signature of the Polish-born French stage performer and singer most often associated with impresario Florenz Ziegfeld, her common-law husband.  Daughter of a German-Jewish glove maker, Held began performing as a singer in Paris and met Ziegfeld in London; she returned with him to New York, where she enjoyed Broadway success and helped him to establish the Ziegfeld Follies. She has signed a small card with slight mounting remnants on the verso; otherwise in very fine condition.  10.4 x 6.5 cm.

Typed letter signed from the American filmmaker, thanking his correspondent for a letter of support and mentioning that "production on my latest film, Malcolm X is keeping me very busy, but it's definitely worth it!" 1 p.; October 21, 1991. On letterhead of his production company 40 Acres and a Mule, with the motto "Ya-dig / sho-nuff" at the lower right. Very fine. 8.5 x 11 inches (21.7 x 28 cm).

Autograph Letter to Peggy Wood, on her role in The Cat and the Fiddle

ALS signed “Cole,” two pages both sides, 5.25 x 7.25, The Travellers letterhead, February 8, 1932. Letter to singer-actress Peggy Wood, in part: "I saw by the papers, &, last night, lear'd from Cockie, that you rehearsing in the Cat & the Fiddle. I can't tell you how happy I am. It's a great show &, I'm sure, even better for London than for New York. And you will make a great person of that part. I have been so worried about you. And this is the reason I write you. For no one ever behaved as beautifully as you did during the long delays of our dead Star Dust. If I can, I shall be there to cheer you on your opening night." In fine condition. Less than a month later, on March 4, 1932, the Jerome Kern-Otto Harbach musical The Cat and the Fiddle made its London debut, with Peggy Wood playing the role of Shirley Sheridan. A fantastic musical association piece.   Handwritten letters from Porter are notoriously uncommon.

James (2 photographs: one portrait and one photograph in costume as "Uncle Dave," both by Black of Jamestown, N.Y., 5.75 x 9.75), John Arthur (Siegel Studio of Chicago, 6 x 9), Arthur Snader (Sarony of New York, 8 x 11), Harry G. Keenan (Stanford of San Francisco, 6.75 x 8.75), Frank E. Walsh (Samarijian of Boston, 7 x 10), and C. G. Cohn (mount embossed with coat of arms, 12 x 15), and piano manufacturer Joseph Hall Chase (Harris-Ewing of Washington DC, 7 x 11), as well as one unsigned photograph of an unidentified man in a military uniform (Pinero Studio of Philadelphia, 4 x 6.5). Signed Calling Card

Original calling card signed by the English comic actor, actor-manager and theatrical producer famous for his roles in farce and in serio-comic melodramas and the first actor to have a West End theater named after him.  The card gives his address as the Gaiety Theatre, where Toole was based from 1868 to 1877.  One corner of the card has been trimmed and a small albumen photograph of the actor affixed. Very slight spotting and mounting remnants on the verso; otherwise in fine condition.  10.4 x 6.2 cm.

Charming original press photograph of the two great veteran entertainers, faux-kissing for the cameras at a 1959 Golden Globe awards dinner. Tucker, the legendary vaudeville singer known as the "Last of the Red-Hot Mamas," and Chevalier, known for his boater hat and French charm, "brought down the house a few minutes later with a duet, 'Some of These Days,' done in rock 'n roll style."  Original press caption printed below image. Autograph letter from the Russian painter and scene and costume designer, known for his extensive work for the Ballets Russes. 1 p. June 21, 1915. To architect and art critic Frantz Jourdain (1847–1935), Bakst writes (translated from the French): "Dear maître, I am very touched by your kind letter and thank you sincerely.
