Original 1956 photograph of the American folk music quartet who sang traditional folk songs from around the world, as well as blues, gospel music, children's songs, labor songs, and American ballads, and sold millions of records at the height of their popularity. Scratches and chips to the image, much less visible in person than in scan; overall in good condition. 26 x 20.4 cm.
Signed program from the young pianist's Carnegie Hall debut on October 24, 1958. Ashkenazy has signed (in Cyrillic) over the first page of the program listing, which included Brahms' Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, as well as works by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev. In very fine condition, together with two newspaper clippings about the recital, a photocopied sheet of further press clippings, and a promotional flyer. The New York Times judged: "Mr. Ashkenazy is a young poet of the piano. He is no thunderer. He does not seek to overpower with speed or brilliance... Signed program from the celebrated pianist, who performed with Kirill P. Kondrashin and the Symphony of the Air on May 19, 1958 at Carnegie Hall, just one month after winning the first International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. Both Cliburn and Kondrashin have signed on the first page of the program listing, which included Prokofiev's Classical Symphony, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto no. 1, and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto no. 3.In very fine condition, together with two newspaper clippings reviewing the concert, stating: "...those who have backed him in this country and the Russians were right. Typed letter signed from the important violinist and pedagogue, teacher of Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, Michael Rabin and many other successful violinists. 8vo. May 29, 1963. Galamian writes to violin collector James K. Sutherland: "Thank you for your nice letter... I hope to meet you personally in the near future. If you are in the northeast this summer, perhaps you will find time to visit our Meadowmount School." Together with the original transmissal envelope and a magazine clipping describing a lesson with Galamian (headlined "Cry Now, Play Later.") In very fine condition.
Original program from a concert of the spectacular Soviet pianist, signed on the cover by Gilels and additionally signed on the internal page by the Soviet politician and diplomat Vyacheslav Molotov. The concert, on October 16, 1960, was presented by the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna and included works by Bach, Schubert, Debussy and Prokofiev. Signed program from the legendary pianist, who performed on February 13, 1959 at Carnegie Hall. He has signed on the first page of the program listing (with a surprising typo at the head of the page!), which included pieces from William Byrd's My Ladye Nevells Booke, Bach's Partita no. 6, Schoenberg's Six Piano Pieces op. 19, Beethoven's Sonata op. 110, and Berg's Sonata op. 1. In very fine condition, together with a flyer for the concert and a press clipping of a review by Harold C. Schonberg of the recital, describing Gould as a "Colorful Canadian" and noting: "Mr. Gould is a tremendous platform personality. He easily out-Pachmanns the late Vladimir de. A striking oversized replica harmonica, constructed ca. 1950's from cardboard and vacuform plastic as an advertising display piece for Hohner, manufacturers of harmonicas and accordions. Just as on the real item, the top of the harmonica is detailed with numbers, the company's logo, and the text, "Marine Band M. Hohner." Archive of original 1961 plans, specifications, working drawings, proposals and bid documents from the American architect Lloyd Wright, for the construction of a Malibu Beach House for Mr & Mrs Jascha Heifetz. The archive includes two large sheets of plans; 3 sets of detailed specifications and agreements, construction cost estimates, and a transmittal letter signed by Wright, all dated from 1960 and 1961. The house was never actually built, due to changing zoning requirements and the Heifetz' divorce; nevertheless, this is a remarkable and detailed archive showing the architect's work. Read More...
