Original press photograph of the beloved Russian American pianist after his return to performing in 1974.  With press caption dated May 20, 1974: "Vladimir Horowitz talks to newsmen in Cleveland recently... Horowitz, 69, was in town to perform at the invitation of the Musical Arts Association, parent of the Cleveland Orchestra.  The appearance marked the end of a six-year period of retirement from the concert stage."  One crease to the corner, scattered spotting to the emulsion (visible when held at an angle) otherwise in fine condition.  20.4 x 25.6 cm.

AMQS from the Australian pianist, composer, and teacher who would later become Dean and then President of the Juilliard School.  Four measures, identified by the composer as Capriccio op. 4 no. 4.  Signed and dated Berlin, June 7, 1914.  Hutcheson was teaching at the time at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin, but left later in 1914 to settle in New York.  Slight spotting; otherwise in very fine condition.  13.3 x 8.5 cm. Autograph letter in English from the great Hungarian violinist and composer, regarding the Austrian violinist Ludwig Straus and mentioning the planned gift of a Guadagnini violin for him. February 4, [1894]. 4 pp. Writing to the London music critic Clarence Lucas (1866–1919), Joachim reports that Straus, who has had to retire from performance due to his arthritis, is "in very good spirits, his intellectual faculties as bright as ever," and confirms that Straus will be happy with forthcoming gift of a Guadagnini violin. Autograph musical quotation from the important Hungarian violinist and composer, who has penned the first two measures of his Variations for Violin and Orchestra in E minor, dating Berlin, February 1881—around the time of the piece's premiere. Joachim inscribes at the head in English to a Miss Wiggerman, and continues below: "I send this line and remain yours very truly, Joseph Joachim." Autograph Letter Ordering Strings and Dog Biscuits, with TLS from his Wife

Autograph letter in French from the legendary violinist, instructing an associate to ship dog biscuits to his home in Berlin and ordering violin strings. Paris, September 1, 1939. 2 pp. Writing days after the outbreak of World War II and very shortly before he moved to the United States to settle, Kreisler requests a Mr. Bottenheim (apparently S.A.M. Bottenheim, Dutch musicologist and secretary to Wilhelm Mengelberg) to "repeat the shipment of Spratt's Biscuits for big dogs, the next time perhaps 20 kilos and ... after a few weeks still another package." Kreisler continues to ask Bottenheim to order violin strings from two luthiers in Berlin and Dresden, and finishes by mentioning that he and his wife will leave for America in 3 days. Together with a typed English translation, transcribed in full below. A related letter from Kreisler to Bottenheim, dated August 29, is held at the Royal Academy of Music Library. Signed photograph of the beloved American violinist and composer of Austrian birth who was one of the most important musicians of the last century. He is shown standing, holding his violin and bow in his right hand, with the other hand in his pocket; he has signed across the image and dated 1915. Photographed by Aimé Dupont, with his raised stamp at the lower edge and the date of 1913 in the print.
