24. Enesco, Georges. (1881-1955).
"L'Aurore" and "Piano Concerto in D minor" - Early Manuscript Sketchleaf

Large and detailed early manuscript sketchleaf from the Romanian violinist and composer, whom Pablo Casals considered "one of the greatest geniuses of modern music."  Dated December 28, 1897, when Enesco was only sixteen, the leaf shows evidence of several works in progress: after writing the title, parts, key and time signatures for the first movement of his piano concerto in D minor (which was never finished), the young composer has turned the sheet and used the lines in the other direction to sketch a work for choir and orchestra, probably his 1898 cantata "L'Aurore."  The last forty-three measures of a movement in 9/8 time are written, with indications for choir, horns, and trombone, and further notes such as "immense buzzing in the orchestra," as well as a French text which deals with pastoral themes.  The movement ends with a fermata and double bar.  After this, Enesco has signed and written in French, "Composed entirely in the evening of December 28, 1897, from half past nine to half past twelve."  The young Romanian was studying in Paris at the time; in February 1898 he would present his first mature work, the Poema Română. 33. Hiller, Ferdinand. (1811 - 1885) [Rossini, Gioacchino. (1792-1868)].
"Fugue on a Subject by Rossini" - Autograph Musical Quotation

Interesting AMQS of a short fugue penned by the influential German conductor and composer, mounted together with a reproduction photograph. The fugue, "Sopra un soggetto di fuga da Rossini" for three voices, begins with the whimsical chromatic subject in the bass and a countersubject above, continues through a complete statement of the subject in a third voice, and then comes to a sudden (but harmonically logical) conclusion after twelve measures - clearly demonstrating Hiller's tremendous compositional skill, while paying hommage to a composer with whom he was closely associated. He has signed below and dated Colonia [Cologne], June 3, 1858. Mounted together with the AMQS is a small reproduction photograph portrait of the composer. Heavy toning and some creases and spots of damage, but very legible and overall in very good condition. AMQS 7 x 6 inches (18.1 x 15.5 cm); photograph 2.75 x 4 inches (6.7 x 10 cm); total size 8.25 x 11.75 inches (20.9 x 29.6 cm). Read More...
