Signed Photograph to Marion Bauer

Original photograph of the American composer who at the turn of the 20th century was American’s best-known both at home and abroad, signed and inscribed 11 years after his death by his widow, Marian MacDowell.  At the lower left corner of the photograph, she has penned a greeting to Miss Marion Bauer and dated August 25, 1919 in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Sepia-toned photograph with the left edge rough and one small scratch at the upper right; otherwise in fine condition. 5 x 7 inches (12.5 x 17.7 cm).

Marian MacDowell was herself a pianist and the founder and developer of the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, an important artists' colony which has continued to support the arts for more than a century.  The recipient of the photograph was Marion Eugénie Bauer (1882 - 1955), American composer, teacher, writer, and music critic who played an active role in shaping American musical identity in the early half of the twentieth century.
