Autograph Musical Manuscript, including sketches of a Ninth Symphony

Fine, early partial autograph working musical manuscript sketch-leaf, including sketches of a Ninth Symphony. 2 pages, apparently the upper right portion of a larger oblong folio, notated in brown ink on paper with twelve-staves visible, the staves drawn with a single rastral, comprising on the recto sketches for an unidentified work or works, containing a number of separate thematic ideas, one marked "sinfonie" and evidently in D minor, another marked "V[iolon]c[e]llo"; on the verso sketches for his Elegischer Gesang, op. 118 (for four voices and string quartet), including the words "Sanft", "Sanft wie du", "Sanft wie du lebte[st]" and "hast du", written in brown ink on systems of varying lengths, with twelve staves visible, numerous cancellations and revisions, 2 pages on one leaf, a fragment (evidently comprising the top right-hand quarter of an oblong 4to sketch-leaf with untrimmed deckle edge to the right), no watermark visible (possibly a blank quadrant from JTW Paper-Type 25), traces of mount on the left-hand border of the verso, diagonal crease, c.166 x 148 mm., [Vienna, c.1814]. Original single sheet flyer Vienna concert program, December 16, 1900. Gustav Mahler conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's 1st and 4th Symphonies and "Coriolan Overture." Light center fold, tiny tear to lower border, toned, else fine. 6 x 9.5 inches (15.2 x 24.1 cm).


Original programs from Mahler's illustrious Viennese tenure are quite scarce; the present example, linking Mahler to his symphonic mentor, is a great rarity indeed.

Upright folio. 25 pp.  A historic presentation copy inscribed by Georges Bizet to the French composer Jules Massenet on the title-page (translated from the French): "To the author of Marie-Magdeleine / with all my admiration and all my heart / Georges Bizet."  Additionally, the front wrapper has been addressed to "Monsieur Massenet / 38, rue Malesherbes" in Bizet's hand.  Original printed limp green wrappers, front and rear wrappers detached; extremities worn and chipped, repairs along same; toned; damp staining to front and rear wrappers.  Title-page detached, damp stained, extremities worn, Bizet's inscription slightly affected by damp; damp staining in all leaves. Autograph musical sketchleaf in the hand of the important bel canto composer known for L'Elisir d'Amore, Lucia di Lammermoor, and more than 70 other operas. The present leaf with 30 measures of unidentified music penned over 6 staves, with 4 measures in the second line struck through and corrected below. The music appears to be a fragment of an instrumental line or vocal line without text, with a repeating rhythm of a half note tied to the first of four eighth notes. Four words of text have been written above the third stave. On manuscript paper with 10 staves. One page, September 4, 1957.  On unusual monogrammed letterhead incorporating an eye (as in "Ira") and the letter "G", addressed to an unidentified “Bill.” In full: “Disregard the design above—this writing paper was a present from a well-meaning friend. But don’t disregard the $30,000 check for a needy Uncle Sam. (Sometimes I wonder if he really needs that much from his nephews who, most of the time, are really needy.)…P. S.
