Franck, César. (1822–1890)
Signed Photograph to the wife of Alfred Cortot
Uncommon signed Pierre Petit of Paris cabinet portrait photograph of the great composer, inscribed to his student, "à mon élève affectionnée Mademoiselle Clotilde Bréal. César Franck." 4.25 x 6.4 inches (10.6 x 16.2 cm.) and 5.6 x 9 inches (14.2 x 23 cm.). Very fine, a pristine example.
Clotilde Bréal (1870–1946) was the daughter of the Dreyfusard academic Michel Bréard, and married to the dramatist Romain Rolland from 1892–1901. The year after their divorce, she married pianist Alfred Cortot.
