133. [Opera] Cavalieri, Lina. (1874–1944) & Muratore, Lucien. (1876–1954).
Original Photograph at Pathephone Studio

Remarkable original ca. 1916 photograph of the two great singers, husband and wife, recording with an orchestra at the Pathephone studio, offering an incredible glimpse into the cumbersome early years of recording technology.  The photograph shows the singers standing in front of the cones of a Pathé cylinder phonograph, an orchestra of at least 15 crowded closely around them.  Brown Brothers Photographers label affixed to verso together with a later clipping from Newsweek discussing the image.  While the attached clipping erroneously states that the photograph was taken in 1905, the January, 1916 "Talking Machine World" magazine announced that the couple were "to record for Pathé" that year.  Light overpainting to image, minor wear to edges and light scratches to surface; overall fine.  8.5 x 7 inches (21.6 x 17.8 cm.).
