Screen-used Andiron

Original screen-used figural lion andiron from the 1939 Civil War epic, sold together with an original period production still (SIP-108-P229; 10 x 8 inches) depicting Clark Gable seated by the fireplace with this andiron clearly visible. The lower portion of the andiron as shown in the image has been separated from the section on offer here and is no longer extant, but the very heavy piece is in otherwise fine condition with moderate wear and some rust from age and use. An uncommon item from an important part of film history. Together with an A1 reproduction poster for the classic film, one in a series of five posters included with The Times newspaper as part of a 2006 promotion with Turner Classic Movies.  Original folding creases, else in fine condition.  23.25 x 33.25 inches (59.4 x 84.1 cm.). Uncommon signed photograph of the Russian-born movie and television actor who enjoyed a long career.  Best known for his role as Sascha in the film Casablanca, it has been said he was given the role in part because he was Bogart's friend and drinking companion. A few surface creases in the upper section, moderate soiling along lower edge and some smudging to the inscription and signature, but nevertheless a quite attractive period example. 8 x 10 inch (20.5 x 25.5 cm).

A most unusual portrait photograph by Scotty Welbourne of the actress and singer in front of an unsettling surreal backdrop prominently featuring a disembodied human eye.  Newspaper clipping mounted to verso reads "It Is Doubtful If Ida Lupino, the Movie Star, Can Explain Why a Hollywood Cameraman Took Her Picture Against a Surrealistic Backdrop Made Up of Converging Lines and a Disembodied Over-sized Human Eye."  There are several stamps to verso, including the date May 30, 1943, and stamps from Acme Newspapers and The American Weekly.  Areas of overpainting, staple marks to corner margins, light rippling to upper edge, else in fine condition.  7 x 9 inches (17.8 x 22.9 cm.).  Read More...

An intriguing typed letter on Samuel Goldwyn Productions letterhead, April 25, 1955, written and signed by his secretary and on behalf of the American film director and screenwriter, noting that he is "currently deep into the film of GUYS AND DOLLS" but sends thanks "for your letter and your very kind and interesting remarks about his film, THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA" and had wanted to "thank you for bringing to his attention THE ADVENTURES OF AUGIE MARCH. Signed doubleweight photograph of Groucho with his trademark cigar, shown in costume for the 1947 American musical comedy film Copacabana, amusingly inscribed "Best vegetable to Ben from Groucho Marx," who evidently had some trouble with the ink in the letter M (scratch attempts visible) and switched to pencil for the writing of his name. Unusual clipped sheet music of the opening bars of "Where is it Written?" from the 1983 film Yentl with music by Legrand and the lyrics by the Bergmans. Signed in blue ink "Thank you / Barbra Streisand." The printed music is a facsimile of a musical manuscript, possibly from an early rehearsal copy of the score.  6.4 x 3.5 inches, mounted to a slightly larger crimson board backing. Portfolio III – Complete Set of Signed Works

Collection of ten oversized images of the portfolio Hurrell III (ca. 1930s-1940s/printed later), each measuring 48" x 36".  Hurrell produced 23 total series, each containing a suite of 10, made from original negatives created by George Hurrell. The images represent some of Hurrell's most innovative work in the glamour portrait genre. Series three includes portraits of: Anna May Wong ca. 1938, Charles Boyer ca. 1938, Joan Crawford in her Brentwood home ca. 1932, violinist Jascha Heifetz, Ann Sheridan ca. 1938, Gilbert Roland ca. 1939, James Cagney, John Barrymore, Veronica Lake, and Gene Tierney. Every print is signed by Hurrell at the lower right corner and numbered 23/50 in the lower left corner. and retains a handwritten edition number in the lower border.  Minor discoloration to the top right corner of one image.
