Signed Photograph at Age 11

An extraordinary rare CDV photograph of the wonderful English musician Harold Bauer, who began as a successful violinist and later had a major career as a pianist. A student of Paderewski, he premiered Debussy's "Children's Corner" and after settling in the US, founded the Beethoven Association and taught for many years at the Manhattan School of Music. He has signed on the verso of a childhood photograph, adding the date of 1884, when he was just eleven years of age. Sold together with a similar childhood signed CDV of his less famous but also remarkable sister, the concert violinist Ethel May Bauer. Both dated, "Souvenir of the 10th of June 1884" and in very fine condition. 4.25 x 2.75 inches (10.5cm x 6.5cm).

Signed program of a recital of the Budapest String Quartet at Town Hall, New York, on February 18, 1934.  6 pp.  Inscribed to cover (counted as p. 1) by first violinist Josef Roisman, "To / Donn Purvis / in remembrance / 30 years ago.  A long time!  Joseph[!] Roisman / Jan. 1964," and signed  by second violinist Alexander Schneider (with enigmatic date, "March 1904," added) and cellist Mischa Schneider.  Not signed by violist Stephan (or István) Ipolyi, who had left the quartet in 1936 and died in 1955.  9 x 6 inches (23.2 x 15 cm).  Slightly frayed and somewhat browned; else in fine condition. Original 1914 Program

Scarce original program from the important Italian composer/pianist/conductor, who led this May 1, 1914 orchestral performance at the Teatro Comunale of Bologna, Italy. Works by Weber, Beethoven, Liszt and by Busoni himself were performed, with soloists Arrigo Serato and Giuseppe Borgatti.   1 p.  In very fine condition.  6.5 x 9.25 inches (16.5 x 23.5 cm.).

Very rare signed photograph of the celebrated string quartet, by J. Groefler, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.  The musicians—first violinist Lucien Capet (1873-1928), second violinist Maurice Hewitt (1884–1971), violoncellist Camille Delobelle (?-?) and violist Henri Benoît (?-?) are seated with their instruments in their hands and music stands in front of them.  Inscription to upper margin, "à Monsieur Victor Bielux du Villan."  Signatures of all four musicians to lower margin, with date, "Novembre 1925."  Photo mounted to cardboard.  Oblong format, 4.25 x 6 inches (11 x 15 cm).  Three of the signatures rather worn and faded; image in fine condition, tipped to a rigid backing along upper edge.  Read More...

Three-quarter-length doubleweight portrait photograph of the American pianist in formal attire, boarding a Pan Am DC-8 at an unidentified airport; no date.  Handstamp to verso, "Please credit/Prière de mentioned PAN AMERICAN...  Paris." 9.5 x 7 inches (24 x 18 cm).  Edges creased; else in very good condition.

The photo was probably taken around 1960, as it shows a very young Cliburn.  Pan Am introduced the DC-8 in 1959.

Original program from a highly interesting recital given by the great French pianist in 1927 with the German mezzo-soprano, Elena Gerhardt.  Alternating works for piano solo with songs (with pianist, Ivor Newton accompanying), the program included music of Vivaldi (Concerto da Camera), Schubert (misc. songs), Chopin (Sonata in B flat, Etudes OP. 10 and 25), Brahms (misc. songs). Program includes song translations and notes by Cortot.  28pp.  Mild wear, some foxing and toning, overall fine.  6.75 x 8.25 inches (17 x 21 cm.).

Exceedingly rare signed Columbia Records bust portrait photograph of the Canadian pianist, composer, and commentator revered as one of the foremost classical pianists of the 20th century, and renowned for his interpretations of the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Signed in black ink "To Paul / Glenn Gould" in the upper left area of the image.  Stamped "Columbia Records Photo / Please Credit" on verso; in his lifetime, the vast majority of Gould's albums were published by Columbia Masterworks (later CBS Masterworks). Some evidence of pen/ink trouble and light smudging to middle of the signature but otherwise in very fine condition. 8 x 10 inches (20.5 x 25.5 cm). Signed photographs of the reclusive pianist are very scarce.
