Gould, Glenn. (1932-1982)

Signed Photograph

Exceedingly rare signed Columbia Records bust portrait photograph of the Canadian pianist, composer, and commentator revered as one of the foremost classical pianists of the 20th century, and renowned for his interpretations of the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Signed in black ink "To Paul / Glenn Gould" in the upper left area of the image.  Stamped "Columbia Records Photo / Please Credit" on verso; in his lifetime, the vast majority of Gould's albums were published by Columbia Masterworks (later CBS Masterworks). Some evidence of pen/ink trouble and light smudging to middle of the signature but otherwise in very fine condition. 8 x 10 inches (20.5 x 25.5 cm). Signed photographs of the reclusive pianist are very scarce. This is the very first true signed Gould photograph we have handled and have encountered only a few on the market in the past 20 years.

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
