A very charming and amusing typed letter signed from the San Francisco journalist and columnist whose daily column over almost sixty years earned him a Pulitzer prize and the title of the "voice and conscience" of the city. He writes to Nancie Monteux, daughter of Pierre Monteux, who had recently left his post as conductor of the San Francisco Symphony: "Greetings, ma vielle - is that right? - estrangere, or do I mean etrangere? Y'see, soon as you left San Francisco, my French went to hell, sacre blah!" He goes on to report that he knows nothing about a Chris Sarantis or Sarantes, before closing with news of a friend, Paul Speegle.  On letterhead of the San Francisco Examiner, where Caen worked from 1950 to 1958; the Monteux family left San Francisco in 1952, dating this letter to ca. 1953-1958. 1 p. One folding crease and some light wrinkling, but overall in fine condition. 8.5 x 7.25 inches (21.6 x 18.4 cm). From the estate of Nancie Monteux.

226. [Literature & Art] Dubuffet, Jean. (1901-1985) .
Collection of Autograph Letters

An interesting collection of letters from the influential French artist whose idealistic approach to aesthetics embraced so called "Art Brut" ("Raw Art" or "Low Art") and eschewed traditional standards of beauty in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making. From the collection of Patrick J. Eddington, a Salt Lake City artist and high school art teacher who maintained a correspondence with many 20th-century artists. The 6 autograph and typed letters, dated 1978 to 1984, represent a warm correspondence: Dubuffet thanks Eddington for the honor of having the high school art exhibition dedicated to him, gladly offers signed books as prizes, and accepts pictures of the Thunder Mountain Monument in Nevada to send on to the Art Brut Collection, as well as reporting the news on his court case against Renault in 1981. Full translations below. 2 ALS, one in large bold writing, and 4 TLS on Dubuffet's letterhead. Each with original airmail envelope, with one additional envelope. Overall in very fine condition. Each 8.25 x 11.5 inches (21 x 28 cm.) Read More...

230. [Literature & Art] Foer, Jonathan Safran. (b. 1977).
Autograph Letter about "Everything is Illuminated"

Autograph letter from the American novelist to his former professor, the writer Elizabeth Benedict, written while traveling in Europe during the early stages of writing his novel Everything is Illuminated. July 8, 1997. Writing from Prague, Foer describes his arrival in the Czech Republic and his trip to the Ukraine (where he was researching family members): "I wasn't able to find the family I was searching for, but stumbled upon much else. There is an arsenal of stories waiting to be told..." and reports on his writing: "I've been getting a lot of writing done. I'm about 140 pages into a novel. It incorporates bits of my Ukraine jaunt, but is not anything like an attempt to put down on paper what I saw and felt—which I may or may not try one day. It's more wild—at times funny (I think), at times somber, deeply informed by Salman Rushdie (who I have been reading recently.) I hope I can show it to you next year." 3 pp. on lined, hole-punched notepaper, with original envelope. In very fine condition. 5.75 x 8.25 inches (14.9 x 21 cm). Read More...
