Rare signed volume of the short-lived Denishawn Magazine's issues 1, 3, and 4, bound together with two souvenir programs of the influential Denishawn dance company. The volume has been inscribed by Ted Shawn on the front free endpaper to the Three Arts Club of New York, signed, and dated June 1929. Original bookplate and library card pocket of the Three Arts Club (a residence and club for women in the fields of music, art, and drama). Together with a typed single-sheet program from the 1964 celebration of Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis's golden wedding anniversary at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, and two pressed flowers, presumably from this event. Signed photograph of the American tap dancer and actor, the best known and most highly paid African American entertainer in the first half of the twentieth century. Bojangles is shown mid-step and has signed and inscribed at the right: "Just a few 'Taps' for Mrs. F. O. Worden and family—with best wishes always / Bill Robinson / 1932." The photograph has also been labeled in the lower margin: "Pearl Theatre, Phila. Pa.," and a further note on the verso notes the date of Bojangles' performance at the theatre: 31 October, 1932. Early manuscript copy of the important castrato's collection of vocal exercises, ca. 1820. Oblong folio (220 x 330 mm), 44 pages. Black ink on heavy paper. Quarter vellum with blue paper boards, ownership plate to front board identified as "Esercizi e solfeggi / per / tenore e soprano / proprietà di / Giuseppe Colla." Boards rubbed and rather worn, scattered light foxing, overall in very good condition. The collection includes 20 exercises with basso continuo accompaniment, and an introduction by the author. Halftone photograph of the great Russian basso, mounted together with an autograph note signed by Chaliapin and dated Vichy, August 8, 1911. He has penned (translated from the French): "Sunshine, love, and music—this is life! M. Chaliapin." Carefully mounted together on heavy card, with the note trimmed around the border of the photograph and a decorative border scored around both. Light toning and folds to the note and rough edges of the card; overall in fine condition, although likely impossible to remove from the present arrangement. Overall size 7.75 x 11 inches (19.8 x 28 cm).

A very interesting group of 12 autograph letters from the important Spanish singer and pedagogue to his friend and colleague Herman Klein, ca. 1890–1903. Most undated, in French and English, some addressed to Mr. Klein and some to "Mon cher ami." Each 1-2 pp., with light toning, some with light soiling and edge wear or losses; overall in very good to fine condition. An important collection from the later years of the great maestro of bel canto technique, who lived to be 101 and played an important role in an entire century of singing. Read More...
