Signed photograph of the American dancer considered the first major prima ballerina from the United States, and the first Native American to hold that rank. She is shown in costume as Odette in Swan Lake, as photographed by Maurice Seymour, and has signed at the foot in blue ballpoint. Glossy photograph in very fine condition, 3.5 x 5 inches (8.9 x 12.6 cm).

Maria Tallchief danced with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and rose to major stardom at the New York City Ballet, where she danced from 1947 to 1965. She was married to Balanchine for 6 years and created a number of Balanchine roles including the Sugarplum Fairy in his Nutcracker.
