The Denishawn Magazine, vol 1, and Souvenir Program - SIGNED

New York: The Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn School of Dancing. 1925. Rare signed volume of the short-lived Denishawn Magazine's issues 1, 3, and 4, bound together with two souvenir programs of the influential Denishawn dance company. The volume has been inscribed by Ted Shawn on the front free endpaper to the Three Arts Club of New York, signed, and dated June 1929. Original bookplate and library card pocket of the Three Arts Club (a residence and club for women in the fields of music, art, and drama). Together with a typed single-sheet program from the 1964 celebration of Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis's golden wedding anniversary at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, and two pressed flowers, presumably from this event.

Quarter cloth binding with printed label on brown boards. One tear at the top of the spine; light water damage to back board; slight split to gutter, but structurally sound and internally in fine condition. 9.25 x 12.25 inches (23.5 x 31 cm).

An important figure in the founding period of modern dance, Ted Shawn founded and performed in the "Denishawn" company with his wife and artistic partner Ruth St. Denis. In 1915 they opened the Denishawn School in Los Angeles; among their many pupils were the great Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Lilian Powell, Evan-Burrows Fontaine, and Charles Weidman. The Denishawn Magazine, a "quarterly review devoted to the art of the dance," was published four times in 1925. In 1931, Shawn and St. Denis purchased the Jacob's Pillow farm in the Berkshires, which became the site of the Jacob's Pillow dance festival. (14793)
