A very charming and amusing typed letter signed from the San Francisco journalist and columnist whose daily column over almost sixty years earned him a Pulitzer prize and the title of the "voice and conscience" of the city. He writes to Nancie Monteux, daughter of Pierre Monteux, who had recently left his post as conductor of the San Francisco Symphony: "Greetings, ma vielle - is that right? - estrangere, or do I mean etrangere? Y'see, soon as you left San Francisco, my French went to hell, sacre blah!" He goes on to report that he knows nothing about a Chris Sarantis or Sarantes, before closing with news of a friend, Paul Speegle. On letterhead of the San Francisco Examiner, where Caen worked from 1950 to 1958; the Monteux family left San Francisco in 1952, dating this letter to ca. 1953-1958. 1 p.
