“Life is the most beautiful fairytale" - Autograph Quotation and Original Photograph

A fabulous quote of the utmost desirability from the beloved Danish author best known for such classic fairy tales as The Ugly Duckling, The Red Shoes, and The Emperor’s New Clothes. In German on an off-white sheet measuring 19.5 x 7 cm, signed and dated below in crisp black ink, “H. C. Andersen, Dresden, 24 August 1857.” In full (translated): “Life is the most beautiful fairytale.” Elegantly matted with an original CDV photograph to 8 x 10 inches.

An evocative image of the influential Scottish-born Victorian philosopher, essayist, and historian. Portrait of Thomas Carlyle, bust-length, in profile, wearing a grey coat. Albumen photograph, 10.2 x 14 cm, laid down to board, 20.4 x 25.4 cm overall. Though unsigned, the National Portrait Gallery (London) identifies the photographer of this portrait as the Victorian photography studio founded in 1863 by Joseph Elliott and Clarence Edmund Fry. Edges of the mount chipped, otherwise in fine condition.

Rare autograph letter from the famously reclusive and prickly artist, 1 page (8vo. "12.30" [Top Flat Studio, 36 Holland Park, London, 1987]), signed ("L.F."), to his downstairs neighbour, Mrs Jo Statham, saying he is "sorry about Heimat" and explaining that his builder has told him her "Ariel" was wrongly fixed to a rusty expansion pipe and fell of its own accord and as they are in the middle of a crucial job she cannot go on the roof; and suggesting she talk to them about it when they get back on Monday. Together with a signed thank-you note on an amusing folded Glen Baxter postcard, and rather amazingly, a large and heavily paint-daubed white cotton rag from the artist's studio. Read More...

Autograph Letter with a smudge of paint!

Autograph letter to Einar Jolin and his fellow students. 1 page in 4to, dated March, 4, 1910, signed "Henri Matisse." The artist tells the students that they should pay the class in advance according to invoice. Folded, a smudge of yellow paint in the margin, hole in upper margin, else fine.


The Swedish painter Einar Jolin (1890-1976) studied with Henri Matisse in Paris from 1908-1914.

Among the composer's larger-scale musical works, Sea-Drift was completed in 1903-1904 and first performed in 1906. A setting for baritone, chorus and orchestra of words by Walt Whitman, the text is drawn from the poem Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking, though it does not use the full text.

A fine signed postcard photograph of the Russian dramatic soprano, one of the greatest singers of the Golden Age, in costume as Isolde, the role in which she made her Covent Garden debut in 1899. A student of Viardot, she debuted in Paris in 1880 and toured with Victor Maurel. A star at all the major venues, she sang Les Huguenots and all the major Wagner roles at Met. Signed in her usual purple scrawl and in fine condition. 8.5 x 13.5 cm.
