Schubert composed 7 Salve Reginas between 1812 and 1824. The "jewel among the Salve Reginas" (Black, Franz Schubert: Music and Belief, p. 27) is No. 5 in A major, composed in November of 1819.
Library of Congress program from a 1959 Budapest String Quartet performance, signed in blue ink on the cover by the esteemed Soviet composer whose 15 symphonies and large body of chamber and instrumental works occupy a place of central importance in the 20th-century repertoire. No works by him were performed on this occasion, but a note in pencil on the cover reports that he "was sitting next to me in 6th row as this concert. He signed this program and we exchanged a few sentences. One of his companions complimented me on my excellent Russian. Olga Alosheoff." Mounting stains along the left edge, else fine.
