Signed theatre program from the German-born actress, known as the first actor to win more than one Academy Award (for The Great Ziegfeld and The Good Earth in 1936 and 1937.) She appeared at the American Repertory Theatre in September 1981, performing for the first time her one-woman rendition of Tennyson's poem Enoch Arden. Henry V at the Theatre Royal Haymarket - 1793 Front Page of the Times of London

Front page of the Tuesday, September 24, 1793 issue of The Times of London, with the first news item at the upper left announcing a performance of Shakespeare's Henry V at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, starring John Philip Kemble as Henry: "This evening will be performed King Henry the Fifth, or, the Conquest of France. King Henry, Mr. Kemble; Duke of Gloucester, Mr. Palmer; Duke of Exeter, Mr. Aikin..." Further news on the page includes notices from the Navy Office about pay to sailors, an offer of a reward from His Majesty's Customs to anyone providing information on a smuggling operation; and advertisements for products such as "Simson's Infallible Aethereal Tincture" for toothache and other afflictions. Heavy edge wear with some losses; overall good. 12 x 18 inches (31 x 46 cm).

Autograph Signed Quotation from Othello

Attractive autograph quotation from the important Italian actor, one of the leading men of the London stage. He toured extensively in the US and in 1886 performed his signature role of Othello opposite the Iago of Edwin Booth and was an inspiration for Verdi and Boito in their creation of perhaps the greatest Italian opera ever written. He has penned on a small album leaf: "Io son colui che Otello... fu! / (Shakespeare) / Tommaso Salvini / New York 1 Ott. 1889." The quotation comes from Act V, scene 4 of Shakespeare's text ("I am not the Othello you once knew.") Attractively matted together with a portrait of Salvini in costume. Some light scuff marks to the mat; otherwise fine. Autograph quotation 7 x 4.5 inches (16.5 x 10 cm), overall size 19 x 14.5 inches.

Number 5 bottom right. 5.5 x 6.25 inches (140 x 155 mm), with a small margin (approx. 4 mm) around the edge of the plate. Small stains at upper edge from verso, nicks along the bottom to just within the plate, otherwise clean and very well preserved.
