Book-form flask made by the important British silversmiths James Dixon & Sons Ltd of Sheffield, c. 1920.  Upper right corner of the "book" separates to reveal the spout, with the seam masked to appear as part of the cover design.  Light wear, some signs of plate loss and pitting, else fine.  5.25 x 7.25 x 1.25 inches (13.3 x 18.4 x 3.2 cm.), holds 24 Oz.

Japanese Pitchers of Solid Silver from Van Cliburn's Collection

Two small pitchers of solid silver with rafia covered handles and trim around the neck base, each with gross weight of 5.5 oz. Approximately 10 cm tall, 8.5 cm in diameter plus handle. Jungin mark for solid silver on bottom which was used throughout the Meiji period until a 1928 ordinance required that objects be marked numerically according to the alloy fineness. The other stamp is of the maker Miyamoto Shoko, a famous silversmith located in the Ginza district of Tokyo which has made fine silver works since 1880, including many of the silver items used by the imperial family of Japan.  Read More...

"Carmen" - SIGNED PROGRAM

Boldly signed tri-fold program for Dali's Carmen lithograph suite, with signature in pencil on the front cover. In fine condition, each panel measuring 7.5 x 9.25 inches (19 x 23.5 cm.).

This attractive brochure program advertises the artist's series of 25 lithographs based on Bizet's great opera, published in 1970 by Shorewood Publishers, New York, in an edition of 276 plus proofs.

Cranberry-Red Orchestra Signs

Six hand-painted placards, America, ca. 1860, which would have been displayed by an orchestra or band at a dance, alerting the audience to the proper steps. Each sign has a different popular dance written on each side, with the selections including Polka, Schottische, March, Quadrille, Waltz, Mazurka, Varieties, Gavotte, Lancers, York, Triange, and Selection. While the orchestra to whom these belonged is unknown, the included original carrying case bears the initials "AEO". Minor paint loss, else very fine. Placards 12.25 x 2 inches (31.1 x 5 cm.), case 13 x 3 inches (33.5 x 7.5 cm.). Graphically attractive, evocative, wonderful.

Tin with 20 sides, 1963, designed by M.C. Escher for the N.V. De Vereenigde Blikfabrieken, metal, marked with artist's monogram, in very fine condition. 14 cm (each rib 9 cm). Issued in an unknown but very limited edition, only for employees of the United Tin factories on the occasion of their 75th anniversary in 1963, the multiple was filled with 450 grams of the famous Dutch chocolate Droste pastilles.  Bool/Locher, p.151. Enamel Stud Buttons

Charming black and white enamel buttons decorated with sheet music for the first and third verses of "God Save the Queen," ca. 1880.  Wear in accordance with age, else fine, .85 x 1 inches (2.2 x 2.6 cm.).

The exact date when "God Save the Queen/King" became the national anthem of the United Kingdom is unknown, as its designation was never officially decreed.  The song, not quite in its present form but recognizable, was first published in 1744. The author is unknown.

"A Grand Selection, The First Part Solely from 'The Messiah'" - Original 1818 Broadside

Original broadside for a Friday, February 13, 1818 concert at Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, featuring the first part of Handel's The Messiah, "To particular Airs and Choruses of which will be introduced the Additional Accompaniments by W. A. Mozart."  To verso, an unknown period hand has rather amusingly recorded that attendance was "very so so until second Price and then pretty full all over. Concluded by Eleven or a few minutes after. Money Taker at... Check Mr. Keating." Additional performances are also noted, including a Flute Concerto by Drouet and a Cello Concerto by Lindley.  Some of the celebrated singers listed include Catherine Stephens, Fanny Corri-Paltoni and John Braham. Creases and rough edges, but overall in fine condition.  Approximately 8.25 x 12.25 inches (21.3 x 42.5 cm). Dollar Bill - Signed with an Original Drawing

Original felt tip sketch on a one-dollar bill, accomplished by the American graffiti artist and social activist known for his instantly recognizable visual language of dancing figures and his work bridging the gap between high and low art.  Haring has framed George Washington's face with two winged figures, an angel to the left and a demon on the right.  Signature to lower right, dated "87."  Fine.  6.125 x 2.625 inches (15.6 x 6.6 cm).

Rare, very large poster for the 1934 exploitation film Road to Ruin, described as the "Story of a high school girl led into a life of shame / A timely warming to parents of today" and headed with "The new jazz sensation / Adults only." The poster shows a scantily-clad girl reclining in a drug-addled daze while the Devil watches over her from above. Printed on two large sheets, which can be assembled to an overall size of 41 x 80 inches. Folded to 11 x 28 inches, with folding creases, some partial splits, and edge wear. Overall very good. An unusual item, a small pocket mirror signed to verso by pianist Fats Waller and trumpeter Erskine Hawkins, bandleader Ted Weems, actor Stepin Fetchit, and a fifth signature from the elder brother of Fats, Edward L.
