Autograph Transcription of a Psalm & Hymn

Autograph copy of a psalm and hymn text in the hand of the 19th-century German composer and organist (unrelated to J. S. Bach), an important member of the musical life of Berlin and a teacher of the young Mendelssohn. Bach has written out the German text of a piece for choir and winds by Friedrich Schneider, "Jehowah! Dir frohlockt der König." 51 lines in ink and pencil in three sections, the first two headed "Psalm" and "Hymnus," and the final section in pencil with some strikethroughs and corrections. 3 pp. Unsigned, undated [ca. 1830's]. In delicate condition with creases and some significant tears, writing in pencil on the final leaf, overall good. 8.5 x 10.75 inches (22 x 27.2 cm).

1876 Autograph Letter to Edmund Astor - "The foreword for the Bach Cantatas will in fact have to be changed..."

Rare autograph letter from the German music historian and musicologist best known for his 1873 biography of Johann Sebastian Bach and as the founder, in 1874, of the Leipzig Bach-Verein. Dated January 24, 1876. Writing to Leipzig music publisher Edmund Astor (son-in-law of Jakov Rieter-Biedermann and director of the Rieder-Biedermann Verlag's Leipzig office), Spitta acknowledges the receipt of a payment and clarifies the terms of an agreement about the publication of an article about the Leipzig Bach-Verein. He details the changes which will need to be made to his introduction to a volume of Bach cantatas which will be published by Rieter-Biedermann, and finishes by mentioning Heinrich von Herzogenberg, his co-founder of the Bach-Verein, who has recently stepped in for Alfred Volkland to conduct a concert. 4. Barber, Samuel. (1910–1981).
Collection of Photographs and Magazines

An important collection of original and mostly unique photographs and magazines relating to the important American composer, from the collection of Manfred Ibel, the dedicatee of his Piano Concerto and his friend and protege. The photographs include two wonderful original childhood portraits of Barber aged 3 and 13, as well as numerous later portraits, and photographs with his partner Gian Carlo Menotti, with colleagues Vladimir Horowitz and Dimitri Mitropoulos, and at the White House with the Kennedys. 77 original snapshots give a glimpse into the private life of Barber and his friends, showing vacation scenes in Menotti and Barber's country retreat, Capricorn, and in Europe. Certificate Awarding the Composer the Governor's Citation

Original certificate awarding the important American composer the Governor's Citation of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Dated September 22, 1971 and signed by Governor Milton J. Shapp and Secretary of the Commonwealth C. Delores Tucker. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Barber studied at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and maintained a close link to the city throughout his life. The composer's name is hand-lettered and a gold seal with purple ribbons is affixed at the foot. One slight chip to the edge and mounting remnants on the verso; overall in fine condition. 11 x 14 inches (28 x 35.7 cm).

Original 1960 Drawing of Barber and Menotti

Lovely original ink drawing of the two composers and partners, with another unidentified man. Signed and dated: Manfred Ibel, 1960. Ibel was a German art student and the flutist for whom Barber wrote the Elegy for Flute and Piano (1959). He became a travel companion and close friend to the composer, and was later the dedicatee of Barber's Piano Concerto. Upper edge rough, some very slight creases; overall in fine condition. 14 x 11 inches (35.3 x 27.3 cm).

A small collection of letters and clippings related to the important American composer and his collaborator and partner, Gian Carlo Menotti. A wonderful birthday letter from Menotti to Barber, on letterhead from their country home, Capricorn, is illustrated with hand drawn camels and a cat bringing Barber gifts and kisses: "I have never before in my life been quite as extravagant with either my greetings or my kisses - but I don't want to appear stingy for your birthday... they are my most precious kisses (and I am sure they'll fit you very nicely --)..." An original clipped autograph signature from the important Hungarian composer, together with two later photographs. One half-tone photograph is clipped from a program and trimmed into a circle; the other photograph, in color, advertises a stamp bearing Bartok's signature and image. In fine condition overall. Signature 2.5 x 1 inches (6 x 2.5 cm); photographs 4.25 x 4.75 inches (11 x 12 cm) and 3.5 x 4.5 inches (8.8 x 11.8 cm).

Autograph Letter to Prunieres, Lamenting a Missed Meeting with Bartok

Neatly penned autograph letter, one page, 5 x 6.5, no date but postmarked April 6, 1922. Addressed on the reverse in Dukas’s own hand to Henri Prunières and signed "Paul Dukas." The letter apologizes for missing a visit from the addressee and from "Monsieur Béla Bartok, whose acquaintance I would have been delighted to make. All the more so since I must respond to your kind invitation for Saturday. I have to be in Valenciennes on Sunday to help with the concert of the Societé du Conservatoire there. And if I don't take the train at 5:10 in the evening on Saturday, I will have to get up at 6:30 to leave on Sunday morning! Typed letter signed from the great American songwriter dated October 30, 1957, responding to a letter from a Miss May Patterson about Army band members in World War I: "As I recall, I was one of a committee assigned to purchase band music for the overseas bands. Unfortunately, I have no information regarding any of the alumni... In closing, let me say that your letter brought back many memories of the First World War." On his letterhead and with the original envelope with "Irving Berlin's 'Sayonara'" stamp; some thumbtack holes but overall in fine condition. 7.25 x 10.5 inches (18.3 x 26.5 cm).

Translated from the French, in full: "My dear Escudier (I believe it was Leon who was the author), I came to shake your hand and thank you for the superb and warm article. There has rarely been written on my compositions something which is so remarkable in its insights, and which has made me so happy. Yours, H. Berlioz." 1 p., with an additional cover page addressed to Escudier. No place, no date. Very uncommon AMQS from important French composer and conductor, one of the major innovators and forces in 20th century music,  who has here neatly penned a short quotation from Improvisation I, part of his longest work, Pli selon pli. Boulez has written out one measure and the title of the movement, "'Le vierge, le vivace et le bel aujourd'hui' (Mallarmé)", signed and dated Salzburg, August 20, 1992.
