Autograph Transcription of a Psalm & Hymn

Autograph copy of a psalm and hymn text in the hand of the 19th-century German composer and organist (unrelated to J. S. Bach), an important member of the musical life of Berlin and a teacher of the young Mendelssohn. Bach has written out the German text of a piece for choir and winds by Friedrich Schneider, "Jehowah! Dir frohlockt der König." 51 lines in ink and pencil in three sections, the first two headed "Psalm" and "Hymnus," and the final section in pencil with some strikethroughs and corrections. 3 pp. Unsigned, undated [ca. 1830's]. In delicate condition with creases and some significant tears, writing in pencil on the final leaf, overall good. 8.5 x 10.75 inches (22 x 27.2 cm).

Autograph letter from French composer and pianist. In French, addressed to Gabriel-Jean-Francois Baixe ("Monsieur le Docteur"), President of the Académie du Var. 1 page. 20 October, 1933. Translated from the French: "My friend Françoise Léo-Roussel brought me on your behalf the precious X-ray and I cannot thank you enough... the analysis disconcerts me, for I thought myself in better shape! I shall have to look after myself better, but the cold has always been bad for me and I hope for the return of the sun, which is one of the best remedies. - Many thanks again and please accept all my warmest and most grateful sentiments. C. Carbonel-Chaminade. P.S. I am enclosing a collection of melodies for the raffle on January 13." Piano Trio in C minor - Autograph Musical Quotation

AMQS from the important French organist, composer and teacher who won the Prix de Rome in 1861 and succeeded Franck as the choirmaster of the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde. On a postcard of Boloni's "La Maddalena," Dubois has penned the first four measures of the theme from his Piano Trio no. 1 in C minor (published in 1904). On the verso, the postcard is addressed to the Argentinian collector Ramona Imaz Otaño and postmarked March 21, 1905. Paris: [Chez L'Auteur]. 1874. Bound copy of twelve issues of a humorous bimonthly periodical on musical affairs, published by Alexis Azevedo, the Parisian music critic and biographer of Rossini. Between paragraphs, the magazine features highly amusing small drawings of personified sixteenth-note characters in various positions: dancing, lying down, carrying a treble clef, and even fencing!  24mo. Nos. 1-6 (April-September 1874), 192 pp; nos 7-12 (October-December 1874), 186 pp; index to the second volume, vi pp. Green and gold marbled boards. Wear and toning to the edges; overall very good in fine binding.

Piano vocal score.  Oblong folio. Engraved throughout. [PN] 3027.  50pp. Text in French and German. Inscribed on the title in an unknown hand to M. Gortebeeck, as a "souvenir de la bonne et belle exécution" of the work on August 19, 1864 at the secondary school of Dendermonde, Belgium, where Gortebeeck was the director of the of the "Koninklijk Harmonieorkest Sint Cecilia." In original pink wrappers, reinforced with contemporary paper along the spine, spine chipped, handling wear and light staining around the edges, title and early page lower margins with evidence of (mostly cleaned) ink staining, a few pages quite toned, overall very good.   Read More...

Shown as a young woman, seated in an armchair, Geyer has signed on the mount below the photograph. Light wrinkling and edge wear to the mount, but otherwise in fine condition. Postcard portrait of the great Italian tenor with a facsimile AMQS from his role as Chopin in the opera by Giacomo Orefice, and with an autograph signature in bold ink to the right of the image. Orefice's fancified version of the composer's life premiered at the Teatro Lirico, Milan, in 1901, and Bassi recorded excerpts from the opera ca. 1903-1905. A very striking original press photograph of the great tenor lying in state, with a young boy looking down into the coffin. Press caption on the verso reads (translated from the German): "In honor of Caruso's memory, his body, which was embalmed at the time of his death and is wonderfully preserved, is dressed every three years in the latest fashion. Rare signed postcard showing the Spanish operatic tenor, Golden age rival of Caruso and Bonci, who, in the course of his international career, earned a reputation as one of the most ‘difficult’ performers of his day. The postcard is signed and poetically inscribed in fountain pen in Spanish and signed “F. Constantino,” adding “Madrid 27-12-1904,” next to his image. Addressed on the verso to the Argentinian collector Ramona Imaz Otaño, with the original Spanish stamps and postmark. In fine condition. 5.5 x 3.5 inches (13.6 x 8.8 cm).
