Original Cotton Club Invitation and Ticket

A pair of original 1930's entrance tickets to the influential jazz club, one in the form of an invitation with blank spaces for a date and signature, and the other a small numbered tear ticket, still intact. The address of 322 No. 17th St. suggests that the tickets may come from the Philadelphia Ridge Cotton Club, incorporated in 1935 in the Ridge Avenue Entertainment District. Pencil notes to the recto and verso of the large ticket, including a detailed struck-through list of budget items on the verso (perhaps the expenses of a traveling jazz musician). Overall fine. 5 x 3 inches (12.8 x 7.6 cm) and 3 x 1 inches (7.6 x 2.9 cm).

Small signed photograph of the important composer and songwriter, together with an amusing typed letter signed from his secretary to actor Monty Woolley. The letter, dated April 25, 1936, asks whether Woolley received the most recent telegram from the Porters: "Also, on the opening night in New York, Mr. Porter sent you a large floral offering, and Mrs. Porter sent you a LARGE gardenia [...] P. S. Also, Mrs. Porter hasn't received a 'bread and butter' letter from you since you departed from the land of sunshine and flowers." Photograph with one small corner crease, overall fine. 2.5 x 3.5 inches (6.3 x 8.9 cm). Letter with light toning and folding creases; overall fine. 8.5 x 11 inches (21.5 x 27.8 cm).

A very interesting archive of sheet music and other materials related to the American aviator, who rose to international fame in 1927 when he made the first solo transatlantic flight, from New York to Paris. The collection includes original sheet music to two popular songs about Lindbergh's accomplishment and a commemorative cigar box label and silver watch fob. Complete contents: Lindbergh (the Eagle of the U.S.A) by Howard Johnson & Al Sherman (New York: Shapiro, Bernstein, and co., 1927; 5 pp.; 9 x 12 inches; toning and edge wear with several small repairs, overall very good); You Flew Over: Uncle Sam Takes His Hat Off to You by Charles Harrison and Joe Verges (Chicago: Ted Brown Music Co., 1927; 5 pp.; 9 x 12 inches; fine); an original "Spirit of St. Louis" cigar box label (Detroit: Mazer-Cressman Cigar Co; 7.5 x 6.5 inches; very fine); a sterling silver watch fob in the shape of a suitcase, bearing Lindbergh's likeness, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty, and the words "FIRST NON STOP FLIGHT, NEW YORK --PARIS." London: Longman and Broderip. [c. 1785]. Original sheet music for "an original air brought from America, by a gentleman long conversant with the Indian tribes, and particularly with the Nation of the Cherokees," with the first line "The Sun sets in Night and the Stars shun the Day."  Music for voice and unfigured bass, with versions of the melody transposed for guitar and German flute. 2 pp. of a bifolium, apparently removed from a binding. A rare group of four original souvenir program booklets from the 1921 and 1922 seasons of the "Grands Concerts Symphoniques Serge Koussevitzky," including the program from the first concert of the first season, together with one program booklet from the 1928 season. Dated November 10, December 8, and December 15, 1921; April 20, 1922 (with Prokofiev performing the premiere of his Third Piano Concerto); and June 14, 1928. The historic concert series, organized by Koussevitzky shortly before he began his tenure with the Boston Symphony, drew from the finest musicians available in Paris and particularly showcased works by Russian composers. The attractive programs feature Art Nouveau typography on the covers, and full-page portrait photographs of the composers and performers involved, as well as advertisements. Two programs include small inserts advertising other concerts. Fayer Photograph with Autograph Inscription

A rare original Fayer photograph of the great Belgian violinist, mounted to board with an autograph inscription from Grumiaux. He has inscribed and signed, dating November 1957, on a sheet of paper glued to the verso and folded around to be displayed below the photograph. Light wrinkling to the photograph, one chip to the board, and toning and light stains to the foot; overall very good. 11.5 x 9.5 inches (29.2 x 24 cm).
