Two Cotton Club Programs, One Signed by Calloway

Two original programs from the Cotton Club, one signed by Cab Calloway on an internal page. The signed program, titled "World's Fair Edition," dating from the 1939 New York World's Fair, features a striking red cover design with a naked woman in heels; Calloway has signed next to his photograph on the page with his biography. Internal pages feature a program with stars Calloway and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and biographies and halftone photographs of the performers and showgirls. 16 pp. The unsigned program, titled Cotton Club Parade: Third Edition [1937], features a topless woman in a large feathered hat and boa on the cover, and lists Bill Robinson, Cab Calloway, Avis Andrews, and the Chocolateers among the performers. 16 pp. Edge wear, with the 1937 program repaired with tape with some small losses; overall in very good to fine condition. 9 x 11 inches.

"Hot Sepian Revue" - 1930's Cotton Club Table Mallet

An original wooden mallet from the legendary jazz club, printed on the handle with the words "Cotton Club / Broadway & 48th Street / Hot Sepian Revue." It was the custom at the Cotton Club to show approval of the performers by rapping on the tables with this type of small wooden hammer. 6.75 inches long. Some light wear; overall fine.

Original Cotton Club Invitation and Ticket

A pair of original 1930's entrance tickets to the influential jazz club, one in the form of an invitation with blank spaces for a date and signature, and the other a small numbered tear ticket, still intact. The address of 322 No. 17th St. suggests that the tickets may come from the Philadelphia Ridge Cotton Club, incorporated in 1935 in the Ridge Avenue Entertainment District. Pencil notes to the recto and verso of the large ticket, including a detailed struck-through list of budget items on the verso (perhaps the expenses of a traveling jazz musician). Overall fine. 5 x 3 inches (12.8 x 7.6 cm) and 3 x 1 inches (7.6 x 2.9 cm).

Two original signed 1960's country music publications, containing photographs of the most famous country and western acts of the day and signed throughout by more than 30 singers and performers. "Country and Western Photo Album number five" (n.d., ca. 1967) is signed on the cover by Wilf Carter, Debbie Lori Kaye and four others, and internally by Sonny James, Stonewall Jackson, Porter Wagoner and his band (George McCormick, Mack Magaha, Buck Trent, and Speck Rhodes), Carl Smith and Goldie Hill Smith, and Bill Phillips. 19 pp. of photographs and simple captions. "Country Music Scrapbook, 16th edition" (copyright 1967) contains signatures from Hank Snow and his band (Jimmie Widener, Bobby Wright, Kayton Roberts, and Chuck [?] Wise), Connie Smith and her band (Jack Watkins, Dick Overbey, and two others), a young Dolly Parton, Bobby Lewis, Carl and Pearl Butler, Darrell Garver, Ernest Tubb and three members of his band, Cal Smith, Juanita Rose, and Sonny James (and four members of his band including Duane West). 48 pp. In fine condition overall.

Page taken from a book of photographic portraits, with a further photograph on the verso of Groucho Marx. A handwritten note on the verso reads: "Posted from US by S.D. on 14th May." Autograph musical quotation from the important jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader, who has penned four chords from his song "Mood Indigo," dated October 10, 1944. He has signed boldly below, apparently on an earlier occasion, and dated Chicago, May 14, 1936. The small album leaf is additionally signed at the left by jazz violinist and bandleader Ben Bernie, dated Chicago, November 15, 1932; and by composer and bandleader Paul Ash, who has penned two measures of the song "I Do, Do You," dating March 17, 1926.
