Larry Davis was the auditorium manager at Indiana University, where he had the opportunity to meet, and collect autographs from, numerous great performers.

Rare signed postcard of the extraordinary pianist, Henry (born Heinz) Jolles, a student of Edwin Fischer, Arthur Schnabel and Kurt Weill who fled the Nazis (his sister and mother were murdered at Auschwitz) to Brazil, where he basically remained until his death in 1965. Signed photograph of the important violinist, who is shown in a portrait holding his instrument and has penned at the foot: "To Herman J. Probst, cordially Fritz Kreisler, 1956." Some light surface cracks; overall fine. 8 x 10 inches (20.5 x 25.3 cm). Together with a typed letter signed (February 8, 1956; 1 p.) from Peggy Lewis, assistant producer of the classical music radio and television program "The Telephone Hour" to Herman Probst, regarding obtaining the photograph of Kreisler.

Signed photograph of the popular two-piano duo, Guy Maier and Lee Pattison. They are shown together in an original Aremiya photograph and have both signed at the foot, with an inscription to Lloyd Hibberd. Toning, slightly unevenly trimmed; overall very good. 9.5 x 7.5 inches (24.3 x 19.2 cm).

Signed concert program for a Sunday, January 24, 1960 all-Chopin performance by the distinguished Polish pianist as part of the Boston University Celebrity Series.  Pieces performed include the Polonaise in C minor, an unspecified Nocturne, the Fantaisie in F minor, the Sonata in B-flat minor, four Mazurkas, two Waltzes, two Études, and the Scherzo in B-flat minor.  Light crease to lower left corner, else fine.  6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm).

Signed photograph of the remarkable Menuhin siblings signed on behalf of all three by Yaltah, the youngest, who has inscribed "To Dear Mrs. / Roberts, with / love, Yehudi, Hephzibah, and Yaltah / 1963."  To verso is a note addressed to "Dearest Yoghurt Queen!!" and dated December 14th, reading in part "Home at last- first thing I thought of was sending you this picture and my loving thanks for your kindness  to me.  The tour was exhausting- but I survived."  In fine condition.  10 x 8 inches (25.4 x 20.3 cm.).

"I never played with him in Boston, or else it would never have escaped my memory." – Typed Letter Signed

TLS from the great violinist to Doris Monteux, widow of the French conductor, regarding an unknown error in one of his books.  17th May 1977;  1 p. on personal stationary, in part "I stand corrected, and I shall have the correction made in future editions... It was before my time, before I knew him, and I never played with him in Boston, or else it would never have escaped my memory." He goes on to say it is good to hear from "a 'deeply chagrined' lady, who is rightly proud and zealous of her great husband's reputation."  Expected mailing folds, crease to upper and lower right corner, else fine.8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).  Together with transmissal envelope, upon which Mme. Concert program from a performance at Symphony Hall in Boston on Sunday, December 1, 1963.  Oistrakh, the legendary Soviet violinist, has signed to cover, while the pianist Frieda Bauer has signed the program listing.  The performance included pieces by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Ovchinnikov, and Szymanowski.  8 pp.  Fine.  6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm).

ALS from the French pianist and pedagogue to the great conductor.  Sept 4 [1956];  1 p.  Translated in part, "My dear friend / I am very touched that you have thought of my 93 years.  A thousand thanks! / I hope to see you again, if the world has not been destroyed.  In reviewing the morning paper, one asks oneself if one can hope again for some days of calm and repose..."  Light mailing folds, else very fine.  5.25 x 8.25 inches (13.3 x 20.9 cm.).  Monteux moved to the United States permanently in 1942, at the height of World War II, and this letter was almost certainly written during that time. Elusive signed photograph of the leading violist of his time, a member of the London String Quartet and the NBC Symphony under Toscanini before embarking on an unprecedented successful solo career as violist. Vintage glossy 8 x 10 inch J. Abresch of NY portrait photograph of Primrose, signed and inscribed in fountain pen to the prominent Canadian violinist Isador Desser of the Toronto Symphony and the Canadian Hambourg Trio: “To Isador Desser, with all good wishes from / William Primrose." Slightly toned along the upper edge, a few minor nicks to margins, overall fine.

Collection of Autograph Letters to Hans-Erich Riebensahm

Pair of rare autograph letters in German from the Austrian/American pianist and composer whose Schubert and Beethoven recordings have classical status and are still considered as beyond compare by many. To his friends Hans-Erich and Gerda Riebensahm in Berlin. The earlier letter, dated New York, 10 May 1950, congratulates Riebensahm on his appointment as a professor at the same school where he taught himself before 1933 (Akademische Hochschule für Musik, now part of the Berlin University of the Arts) and lauds him for performing the "32" (i.e. Beethoven's sonatas, which Schnabel was the first to record in their entirety) and "48" (i.e., Bach's Wohltemperiertes Clavier). Schnabel list the works he has composed since 1935 (three symphonies, a choral symphony, a piano trio and so on); one piano piece was enclosed with the letter (not part of this item). In a postscript, he sends his regards to Eduard Erdmann. The later letter, dated New York, 11 October 1950, mostly deals with health issues. 6 pages, 8vo, on headed paper of the Hotel Peter Stuyvesant, New York, with two playful stanzas of autograph verse based on the recipient's name and address on a separate sheet (undated).
