16188. [Female Impersonator] Caro, Harry. (1899 - 1963).
Paris De Paree / The Original Albert Alberta Sex Family

Advertising brochure with title "Paris de Paree: The Original Albert Alberta Sex Family. The European Enigma." Four pages as folded, 9.5 x 12.5 in. A few folds, but overall very good.  Last page with "Albert-Alberta's" autobiographical information. S/he claimed to have been born in 1899 in France and named Alberta at birth. Brought up as a girl, about the age of 10 (plus a few months), the two sides of her body began growing out of proportion, eventually developing male characteristics on the right and female characteristics on the left. There followed four normal siblings, then a young brother, named Albert. At birth a beautiful baby boy (in Alberta's words), but at the age of seven, one breast grew, and at the age of 14, the other breast grew, then later, the neck lengthened and smoothed (changes occurring every seven years according to Alberta). Otherwise, he was a perfectly formed athletic male. They took their show on the road as the "Albert Alberta Sex Family" in the 1930s. Albert-Alberta worked at Coney Island, Hubert's Museum in Times Square, in the Loew's theater circuit - as her publicity touts, "all the major theatrical circuits of United States and Canada." 15073. Duchamp, Marcel. (1887-1968).
"Esquivons Les Ecchymoses Esquimeaux Aux Mots Exquis" - SIGNED Screenprinted Disk Trial Proof

Original signed screen printed disk designed with a spiraling text in French, one of the last works by the important French conceptual artist, produced to be mounted on a record which was issued with SMS magazine no. 2 (April 1968). Boldly signed and dated 1968 by Duchamp at the lower right of the untrimmed sheet. The record for which this label was intended, distributed directly to the subscribers of the SMS portfolios, was a seven-minute recording of Duchamp himself reading "Contrepèteries," a form of wordplay in French similar to the spoonerism; the spiraling text on the disk is an example of this genre. Both the recording and the design are a reference to Duchamp's iconic 1926 film Anemic Cinema, in which are shown nine revolving disks printed with contrepèteries, interspersed with abstract spiraling animations. Duchamp's fascination with spirals and word-play continued throughout his life, and he returned to the material of Anemic Cinema to create this work a few months before his death. Duchamp has signed and dated 1968 at the lower right. Published in an edition of approximately 2,000 copies, the edition itself was not signed. Peel-off wax paper backing paper is still affixed and like new; original wax paper sleeve shows traces of the embossment. 9 x 8 inches. Archivally framed. Read More...

18903. Hockney, David. (b. 1937).
The Artist's Bow Tie

Orange Dupioni silk bow tie belonging to the British artist, equally as famous for his eccentric manner of dress as for his artwork.  "A master of casual dressing, Hockney's sense of style inspires today's designers; Burberry, Jonathan Saunders and Ossie Clark have all paid tribute to [him] in previous collections...[He] dressed with a sense of joy and mischief, deliberately wearing odd socks, specs with one lense framed in black and the other gold... Now in his 80's, Hockney can still turn a look, often seen wearing slacks, button downs, bright knits, colorful ties, and a flat cap with his trademark specs." 712. [Matisse, Henri. (1869-1954)] Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo..
Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo 1939-1940 Season. Souvenir Program.

New York: Wm. C. Popper & Co. . 1939. First printing. Folio, 66 pages (12" x 9-1/2") Stapled wraps. Illustrated cover by Henri Matisse. Profusely illustrated with photos and theater works (Picasso, Dali, Berman, Tchelitcheff). Program opens with photo of director Leonide Massine. First page of text describes the extraordinary conditions that led to the company coming to America: "With European capitols now closed to the ballet because of the war, the sponsors of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo sense the imperative need to preserve this form of art as a cultural heritage for future generations." Beautiful full-page photos of Alexandra Danilova, Alicia Markova, Mia Slavenska. Much of the program is taken up by synopses of the ballets--an amazing lineup of composers, artists and choreographers. There are 3 pages of sketches by Dali for Wagner's "Bacchanale" and "Devil's Holiday," along with a great photo of the artist studying a figurine. A 4-page color insert printed on heavy stock features designs and costumes by Tchelitcheff, Dali (double-page spread) and Picasso; further photos show costumes for "Bacchanale" and Matisse working on a set. Lots and lots of photos of dancers, and a wonderful photo on the last page of 5 ballerinas backstage arranging their hair. Binding is tight, slight edgewear to back cover, creases to corners, small area of water damage to top edge. A remarkable production attesting to the company's determination to stay alive during the war.
