"To my darling sweetheart...the sweet girl in the world to me" – Postcard Love Note

Charming vintage postcard photograph by Kline Photo [no place, no date] of one Dancing Carl shown in a dance pose with arms extended front and backwards, one leg bent, the other kicked back, his name printed within the negative, inscribed by him in blue ink with a lengthy inscription on both sides. The smitten Carl, writes in part [all sic] on the recto, "Frum [Dancing Carl] To my darling sweetheart...the sweet girl in the world to me"; and to the verso,  "honey hope you will like it / I will send you more that / if you want the....love you darling..." followed by the bulk of the lyrics to the 1934 Vee Lawnhurst & Tot Seymour song, "Accent on Youth," beginning "Why is the rose beginning to bud in Spring? / Why are the birds beginning to fly and sing? / And why have I this new sensation? / It's just the accent on youth! /Why do I year for kisses so fresh and so sweet?..." Trio of postcard photographs of the great violinist, shown in the early stages of his long career.  One of the postcards, postmarked "Jul 7 07," has a note in an unknown hand to verso reading, in part, "I have been looking for photographs of your musical favourites but could not find the one.  I do not know whether you have this one or not."  In fine condition.  5.5 x 3.5 inches (13.3 x 8.2 cm.).

Four postcard photographs of the the English violinist, a student of Elgar, Wilhelmj and Ševčík before embarking on a major international four-decade career.  She was the first to perform Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending," and the work was dedicated to her.  Hall is shown with her violin in all four photographs, two of which are different croppings of the same image.  In very fine condition.  3.25 x 5.25 inches (8.2 x 13.3 cm.).

Postcard with aerial view of the Pleyel piano factory

Unusual postcard with aerial view of the Pleyel piano factory in the Parisian suburb of St-Denis, dated March 24, 1925 in the caption.  Actually used as a post card by an unknown person, signed (translated from the French), "Your little niece who loves you. Fuigui[?]"; letter undated.   Oblong format, 3.5 x 5.5 inches (9.3 x 14 cm). 

The Pleyel factory was located at St-Denis from 1807 to 1960.  The picture shows older buildings, surrounded by larger modern ones.

Uncommon signed A. Gubtschewsky postcard photograph of the great Russian actor ca. 1920.  Moskvin has signed his name to the lower margin next to a printed label reading "J.M. Moskvine / Théâtre Artistique de Moscou."  In very fine condition.  3.5 x 5.5 inches (8.9 x 14 cm.).

A People's Artist of the USSR, Moskvin would go on to become director of the Moscow Art Theatre in 1943.

Autograph postcard signed from the legendary coloratura soprano, who has written to her friend Amelia Arimondi on a postcard depicting the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C..  Dated 23/12/20, New York, she sends the fellow opera singer in Chicago "my best wishes for Christmas and the new year and all the happiness that your heart desires. Edwardian Album of Postcard Photographs

Wonderful collection of 35 Edwardian and Georgian postcard portraits, mostly of violinists but also including some composers, conductors, and other musicians of the era, all tipped into pages of a green souvenir album with a raised four leaf clover design to the cover.  The majority are postcard photographs, though a few are decorated with illustrations or caricatures. Individuals represented here include Oskar Back, Ole Bull, John Dull, Spencer Dyke, Marie Hall (2), Lady Hallé (2), the Hambourg Brothers, two postcard photographs and a halftone photograph of Joseph Joachim, Jaroslav Kocián, Fritz Kreisler, Jan Kubelík (6), Pablo de Sarasate, Emil Sauer & Willy Burmester, an etching of Antonio Stradivari, three postcard photographs and a caricature of Cesar Thomson, Auguste van Biene, Antoine van Heck (2), Henri Vieuxtemps, Franz von Vécsey, Henryk Wieniawski, August Wilhelmj, and Eugène Ysaÿe, together with one unidentified individual.  Separation to album spine interior, general signs of wear, overall in fine condition.  Postcards generally in fine condition and most not postally cancelled or otherwise marked.  7.75 x 10 inches (19.7 x 25.4 cm.).

Postcard portrait photograph of the great fiddler tuning his instrument.  Pinhole to top and bottom margin, else in fine condition.  3.25 x 5.25 inches (8.2 x 13.3 cm.).

Carl Flesch called Ysaye "the most outstanding and individual violinist I have ever heard in my life," and he was the dedicatee of many major works from Debussy, Saint-Saens, Franck, Chausson and others.
