An uncommon large original doubleweight Benjamin of Paris 9.5 x 12 inch (16 x 21 cm) photograph of the renowned French pianist, composer and pedagogue of Hungarian birth. Inscribed to the lower mount in 1929 to Prof. William Wolf, of the Wolf Institute of Music, Lancaster PA. Together with a complementary portrait from the same session, unsigned. Lower left corner of inscribed mount perished, with small stains and some wear to upper left edge, neither affecting the inscription or signature and otherwise both fine. Signed Toppo of NY photograph of the pianist, a student of von Sauer and Schnabel and known especially for performing the complete sonatas by Franz Schubert in London and New York in 1938, when they were rarely played. Signed and inscribed in 1942 to Harry Friedgut (1901-1975), managing director of the New York City Center of Music and Drama. Very fine. 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm).

Exceedingly rare signed Columbia Records bust portrait photograph of the Canadian pianist, composer, and commentator revered as one of the foremost classical pianists of the 20th century, and renowned for his interpretations of the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Signed in black ink "To Paul / Glenn Gould" in the upper left area of the image.  Stamped "Columbia Records Photo / Please Credit" on verso; in his lifetime, the vast majority of Gould's albums were published by Columbia Masterworks (later CBS Masterworks). Some evidence of pen/ink trouble and light smudging to middle of the signature but otherwise in very fine condition. 8 x 10 inches (20.5 x 25.5 cm). Signed photographs of the reclusive pianist are very scarce. Dramatic 1949 promotional bust portrait photograph of the great pianist whose flourishing career was cut tragically short by a plane crash on the way back from Australia.  Copland wrote of him: “ I cannot conceive of his ever having given a dull performance – an erratic one, perhaps, a misguided or stylistically incongruous one maybe, but invariably one that was electric and alive.”  Mild toning; overall fine.  8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).
