Oversize 4to softcover. 235 pp, including six chapters, a chronology, checklist of the exhibition with thumbnail illustrations etc. Inscribed and signed on the red ffe "For Alan" and dated 8/26/86, likely to someone associated with the museum, with a Seattle Museum business card of Helen Abbott, Public Relations Manager, laid in.  An attractive signed example of this stunning catalog for the career retrospective Seattle Art Museum exhibition of the important American artist who taught at the University of Washington from 1971 to 1986. With 4 paperclip indentations to page edges, some dog eared lower page corners, and notations in black pen to a number of pages, especially in the exhibition checklist.  Read More...

Original maquette for a baptismal certificate by the important painter, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. The design, in black ink and blue gouache surrounded by a red border, touched in white, features the name François and the baptismal date of May 26, 1937, surrounded by flowers and the words "Il n'est pas necessaire d'espérer pour entreprendre et de réussir pour persévérer" ("One need not hope in order to undertake something, nor succeed in order to persevere.") Together with an autograph letter signed ("Henri Matisse"), 1 p, 4to, Nice, February 8, 1938, to M. Prade[?], transmitting the maquette. Unusual still-life carte de visite photograph, ca. 1880s, of a mouse ensnared in an intricate homemade mouse trap.  The peculiar trap has been arranged in an open facing box, with an open pocket knife perched on top and adding to the somewhat threatening and surreal nature of the composition.  Photographer's stamp to verso.  Light scratching to surface and mild toning throughout; overall fine.  Photograph 2.5 x 4.25 inches (6.35 x 10.8 cm.); matted to an overall size of 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).

With occasional underlining and marginalia in the hand of Richard Howard, including a few notes to the ffe and rear jacket flap.  With some staining to the fore-edge in the final approximately 70 pp, barely coming round the margins in most cases and otherwise a tight and generally fine copy throughout. Chair from the Wallace Stevens Collection (ca. 1930)

Wooden chair of cross-back form, with painted floral decorations to the back, arms, and legs, ca. 1930, owned and used by the Pulitzer-Prize winning American Modernist poet. Formerly displayed in the now closed Wallace Stevens Room at Fort Andross in Brunswick, Maine and acquired directly from the Curator, Alison Johnson, Author of Wallace Stevens: A Dual Life as Poet and Insurance Executive and Producer/Director/Writer of The World of Wallace Stevens. Stevens's grandson, Peter "Zeke" Hanchak, has noted that Wallace Stevens kept his small secretary and this chair in his sitting room in CT, which was to the right at the top of the stairway. That secretary, which now resides in the Poetry Room at Harvard, has floral paintings on it that are very similar to the ones on the present chair.
