Wooden Tea Table from the Stravinsky Collection

Wooden tea table owned by the Stravinsky family, ca. late 18th/early19th c., likely acquired in California ca. 1940, where it was very much a part of daily life.  Stravinsky and his wife Vera used this table for their afternoon tea and patience games, as well as evening drinks.  Smoking accompanied all of these activities, and the cigarette burns scattered across the surface of the table were deliberately preserved when the table was refinished in 2009.  40 inches in diameter plus two nesting extension leaves. Signed lithograph by the legendary jazz trumpeter, being a limited signed edition promotional poster for his 1989 Warner Bros. album Amandla.  Miles signed 150 numbered copies of this poster to be used as promotional items, the present example numbered #92/150 and signed in silver ink, with Davis adding a single musical note to his name. Wicker Chair from the "Casablanca" Set of Rick's Café (1942)

Original bamboo and wicker chair used as set decoration in Rick's Café, the café and illegal gambling establishment run by Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine in the classic 1942 Warner Bros. film Casablanca. These style of bamboo framed, wicker covered chairs can be seen throughout the café during the film. In fine condition, accompanied by a framed reprint Casablanca set photograph, showing similar chairs in situ.  34 inches high. Expected wear to wicker, overall fine condition. The design, in black ink and blue gouache surrounded by a red border, touched in white, features the name François and the baptismal date of May 26, 1937, surrounded by flowers and the words "Il n'est pas necessaire d'espérer pour entreprendre et de réussir pour persévérer" ("One need not hope in order to undertake something, nor succeed in order to persevere.") Together with an autograph letter signed ("Henri Matisse"), 1 p, 4to, Nice, February 8, 1938, to M. Prade[?], transmitting the maquette. Chair from the Wallace Stevens Collection (ca. 1930)

Wooden chair of cross-back form, with painted floral decorations to the back, arms, and legs, ca. 1930, owned and used by the Pulitzer-Prize winning American Modernist poet. Formerly displayed in the now closed Wallace Stevens Room at Fort Andross in Brunswick, Maine and acquired directly from the Curator, Alison Johnson, Author of Wallace Stevens: A Dual Life as Poet and Insurance Executive and Producer/Director/Writer of The World of Wallace Stevens. Stevens's grandson, Peter "Zeke" Hanchak, has noted that Wallace Stevens kept his small secretary and this chair in his sitting room in CT, which was to the right at the top of the stairway. That secretary, which now resides in the Poetry Room at Harvard, has floral paintings on it that are very similar to the ones on the present chair.
