Single sheet program, Thursday, March 20, 1879. Philharmonic Society, St. James's Hall [London]. The program includes one of the first performances of the Brahms Violin Concerto, performed by the dedicateee of the work, Joseph Joachim, just three months after its premiere in Leipzig. In addition to Schumann's Symphony in E-flat and Weber's "Overture - Ruler of the Spirits," Nathalie Janotha performed the Beethoven 4th Concerto. 1869 CDV photograph of the great composer with Julius Stockhausen, the important German singer and singing master. Stamped at the base and verso by the photographer, Adele of Germany. 6.5 x 10 cm. A few stray marks, overall in very fine condition.



In 1868, Brahms conducted the first complete performance of his German Requiem, with Julius Stockhausen as the baritone soloist. The performance was a great success and marked a turning point in his career.

"Peter Grimes" - Signed by Britten, Pears and Original Cast

A copy of "Sadler's Wells Opera Book No.3, Peter Grimes, by Benjamin Britten" (Bodley Head, 1945), original printed wrappers with some minor spine and edge wear (as often with books printed to wartime specifications), slim 8vo (approx. 185 x 125mm). This copy DOUBLE-SIGNED by composer Benjamin Britten, once "with best wishes" in pencil below his frontispiece portrait, and again in ink on the title page. Additionally signed by Peter Pears (over a printed illustration of his 'Peter Grimes' character) and by fellow cast members Edmund Donlevy, Roderick Jones, Edith Coates, Owen Brannigan, Valetta Iacopi, Tom Culbert, Joan Cross and Minnia Bower. An excellent item of operatic history.

Signed original Houston Rogers photograph of English composer, conductor and pianist, inscribed to the Australian operatic soprano, Sylvia Fisher (1910-1996) who created the role of Miss Wingrave in Britten's "Owen Wingrave" in 1971: "To dear Sylvia Fisher / in admiration + / gratitude / Benjamin Britten." 8 x 10 inches, slight chippings along the left and upper margins, overall in fine condition. A crisp original print, stamped by the noted photographer on the verso, with a wonderful association inscription from the composer.

A student of Hubay, Enesco and Persinger, she remained in Europe during WWII, living with Wolf-Ferrari in Germany and premiering his Violin Concerto in 1943. Signed Letter suggesting Cuomo for President

Typed letter, signed "Elliott Carter." 1 page, October 1, 1988 (postmark cancellation). The composer writes to a student who has written to him asking who he would like to see as the next President. In full: "Dear sir, I would like to see Mr. Mario Cuomo, governor of New York State be our president, but I can understand his not wishing to run after all the nonsense I read in the papers and see on TV that any intelligent man would want to avoid during the campaigning period. The issues no longer seem to be the important and serious ones as far as getting votes is concerned. " Typed on the back of the handwritten letter to him, in fine condition.

Signed 7 x 9 inch photograph from the great Spanish composer, conductor, and cellist, one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, also well known as a humanitarian. An original doubleweight photograph of the Casals in his later years, playing his cello with his pipe in his mouth. Signed "Pablo Casals" in ink on the cello, creased corner lower left, some light rippling along the top, verso with some leaves taped on and a note reading "Casals included these dried leaves in the envelope."
