2. [Beethoven, Ludwig van. (1770–1827)] Furtwangler, Wilhelm. (1886-1954).
Important Letter regarding Beethoven Symphonies and a Nazi Performance

An important letter or typed statement from the conductor regarding a proposal to perform the last movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony at the cultural conference of the NSDAP party conference, a plan he considers on the whole to be “purely artistically irresponsible." He writes, in part (full translation below), that "the IX is not a symphony of struggle and victory, but a symphony of humanity with a religious background. Schiller's words fit in my opinion, for the occasion of a victory and peace celebration, otherwise not. Whereas, for example, the finale of the Fifth Symphony expresses the celebration of victory infinitely more precisely and forcefully in pure music." 3. Beethoven, Ludwig van. (1770–1827).
1812 Life Mask

A striking late 19th century plaster cast replica made from the life mask originally taken by the sculptor Franz Klein (1779 - after 1836) in 1812. The mask is complete and with the original shape, unlike some modern copies made with modified extended neck.  Cast in natural white plaster, verso hollowed interior beneath an integral suspension loop.   With red paint drippings and small gray spots splattered throughout, otherwise normal surface buildup, dust, some tiny surface nicks scattered about.  7 x 8.5 inches (17.8 x 21.6 cm.). Autograph Letter to Marya Freund

Autograph Letter Signed in German, penned on the reverse of a 3.5 x 5.25 photo postcard of the German city Trahutten, no date [circa 1928]. A handwritten letter from both Alban Berg and his wife Helene Nahowski to Polish singer Marya Freund, with Alban adding the postscript, which reads (translated): “Dearest lady, would you be so kind as to forward the enclosed letter to Mme. Dubost. I mistakenly left her address in Vienna. Thank you very much.” Helene’s portion reads: “I hope you got the letter I wrote immediately after returning from Paris. How are you? What will you do this summer?” Although undated, it seems very likely that it was written in Spring of 1928, as Berg refers to Jeanne Dubost, the hostess of the salon where Berg's Lyric Suite had been premiered on March 22, 1928.  Dubost played an important role in establishing the reputation of the Lyric Suite: it was in her salon that the piece was performed for the first time, on March 22, 1928. The quartet was paired with several songs, with Berg himself at the piano. "It was wonderful in Paris, all the more terrible in Zurich," the composer wrote to Adorno in July 1928 (Theodor W. Autograph letter signed to "Concertmeister" Carl Halir (originally, Karel Halíř) of "Weimar". Breslau [now Wrocław, Poland], September, 25, 1888. In German. 3 pp. of bifolium.  Envelope signed additionally on the verso, "M. Bruch." The intriguing letter is a response to a list of works that Halir had suggested to Bruch, then music director in Breslau, for his upcoming appearance as a soloist. In full: "Many thanks for your welcome programming suggestions. Brahms has been played by De Ahna and Joachim here and must rest for a while. Joachim will play Beethoven here with us this year on November 20. Tchaikovsky is not particularly welcome here. My Concerto no. 1 (G minor) has been played too often, my No. 2 and No. 3 (Scottish) has been played by Sarasate multiple times. Thus, we should maybe focus on the Lassen concerto.
