Sepia press photograph of two cast members from the original 1926 production of Eugene O'Neill's The Great God Brown, one of whom, dancer Margaret Severn, is wearing a mask by the famous Polish painter and designer.  The typed press note mounted to verso is dated April 12, 1926, and reads, in part, "Margaret Severn who was the first dancer to use a Benda Mask on the stage, wearing her Benda Mask and Leona Hogarth who plays the leading feminine role in The Great God Brown, known as the play of masks, wearing the dramatic mask she uses in the play."  Wide World Photos stamp to verso.  Overall in fine condition.  8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.). 'The Quests' – Unpublished Working Musical Manuscript from "Camelot"

Autograph musical manuscript entirely in the hand of Frederick Loewe for the song “The Quests,” intended for Camelot but omitted from the published score. Three pages, large 4to (9.5 x 12.5 inches), unsigned, [1959], with the cover sheet marked in pencil, “The Quests,” and with the names of the scene’s four characters: “Lancelot—Prisoner—Sirens—Knights.” Lyrics and musical score neatly written across interior two pages and to the rear second leaf, including 36 lines of music and lyrics, reading in part: “Woe is me [Sir Roderick], Woe is me! What bitter fate is mine! Woe is me! The victim of a swine, home he has a dungeon full of pris-ness; And thrice a day he gives them all the business. Woe is me! Woe is me! Yes! Lance Will You Change? Yes! Yes! Will you change? Will you change? Will you scrub your soul until you change? Turn from evil if I spare you? Will you change? [Meliagrance] I will change! I will change! I will scrub my soul until I change. I’ll become a saint I swear you! I will change. [Lance] [A chair at the table, Oh!] Go back to the table O! Tell them you have seen the light! Long as you’re able O! You will serve the cause of Right. Vow to the King you’ll never more live by brutal force; All of the things he’s fighting for You endorse [Meliagrance] Of course!” In fine condition. Walker is seen with dark makeup on in a checked suit, lamentably captioned "Just a Jolly Coon," and in a tuxedo captioned "A Model in Colored High Art." Published by Carter & Gut, New York, as part of a "Williams and Walker" series. Undated, ca. 1900-1910. The Winters Art Lithographing Company's Popular Portfolios of the World's Columbian Exposition.

Chicago: The Winters Art Lithographing Company. 1891. Booklet illustrated with 15 color lithographs, unpaginated (32 pages), 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches, textured paper, cord binding. Delicate and richly colored illustrations with glossy highlights by Charles Graham showing all aspects of the World's Columbian Exposition. Of particular note is the centerfold "Birdseye View of Grounds and Buildings. Columbian Exposition, Chicago,1893." The fourteen other color illustrations feature the Electrical Building, Horticultural Building, Woman's Building, and so on. This booklet was distributed by the Philadelphia cloth merchant Henry W. Green & Co. and was published in 1891, looking ahead to the opening in 1893. Extensive staining, nicks, corner creases, some dampstaining,  two leaves with significant tears, front cover stained and separated from spine. A worn copy of a beautiful publication.

Pair of Photographs from 1882 NY Sarony Portrait Session

Pair of Sarony of New York cabinet photographs of the Irish playwright and leader of the Aesthetic Movement, taken at the start of his 1882 lecture tour of the United States and Canada by Napoleon Sarony, the pre-eminent New York photographer of his day and one of the city's favourite eccentrics.  During the portrait sitting, Wilde posed for at least 27 photographs, in various attire which he anticipated would be distributed to cities in advance of his arrival. The present images are numbered 1 and 21 within the negatives, the present examples with written labels affixed to the photographs "8/30. Do." and "8/26. Oscar." Both photographs have been trimmed to omit the lower margin, light wear to edges, but otherwise in very good  condition. Read More...

'82" to an autograph album leaf, presented here handsomely matted together with a period halftone portrait photograph.   Autograph quotation from Shakespeare's Hamlet ("A King of Shreds and Patches") in an unidentified hand to verso of album leaf, dated March 18, 1882.  Mild toning and foxing and slight show-through from verso, with small loss to the lower margin of the album leaf; else fine.  Leaf 5.15 x 7.6 inches (13 x 19.3 cm.); overall 14.5 x 10.1 inches (36.8 x 25.6 cm.). Extraordinary item related to the Irish playwright and leader of the Aesthetic Movement, an original program from a lecture given at The Princes' Hall in Piccadilly on Tuesday, July 10th 1883, entitled "Personal Impressions of America."  Bifold.  Printed in brown ink on patinated paper by W.F. Morse, who is identified as Wilde's lecture manager.  Staining to rear cover, else in fine condition.  6.125 x 9.25 inches (15.6 x 23.5 cm.). The present item is neither in Mason's bibliography nor mentioned by Ellmann, and appears to be unrecorded.   Read More...

Full ink signature, “Oscar Wilde / New Orleans / June 26” on an off-white album page, the year [18]82 added in another hand. 7.75 x 4.75 inches (19.5 x 12.25 cm). Together with a modern postcard reproduction photograph. Light handling stains, else fine. The autograph page removed by Schubertiade from an album kept the by the great-grandfather of our consignor, who lived in New Orleans 1867-1939 and was at the time part of a small theatre group there.
