78. [Instrumentalists] Gould, Glenn. (1932-1982).
Signed Photograph

Exceedingly rare signed Columbia Records bust portrait photograph of the Canadian pianist, composer, and commentator revered as one of the foremost classical pianists of the 20th century, and renowned for his interpretations of the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Signed in black ink "To Paul / Glenn Gould" in the upper left area of the image.  Stamped "Columbia Records Photo / Please Credit" on verso; in his lifetime, the vast majority of Gould's albums were published by Columbia Masterworks (later CBS Masterworks). Some evidence of pen/ink trouble and light smudging to middle of the signature but otherwise in very fine condition. 8 x 10 inches (20.5 x 25.5 cm). Signed photographs of the reclusive pianist are very scarce. This is the very first true signed Gould photograph we have handled and have encountered only a few on the market in the past 20 years.  Read More...

Rare Signed Engraving in 'La Gitana'

Uncommon signed engraving of the famous Italian ballerina of the Romantic ballet era, a central figure in the history of European dance, depicted during a performance in her father's ballet, La Gitana. Taglioni has signed in ink to the lower right. Published by Bettini Lithography of Bologna, ca. 1842. Heavy fold creasing and foxing throughout, cropping at the lower margin, two hole punches to the upper margin; overall in very good condition. 12 x 19 inches (30.5 x 48.3 cm.). Read More...

181. [Film & Theatre] [Gone with the Wind] Gable, Clark. (1901–1960).
Screen-used Andiron

Original screen-used figural lion andiron from the 1939 Civil War epic, sold together with an original period production still (SIP-108-P229; 10 x 8 inches) depicting Clark Gable seated by the fireplace with this andiron clearly visible. The lower portion of the andiron as shown in the image has been separated from the section on offer here and is no longer extant, but the very heavy piece is in otherwise fine condition with moderate wear and some rust from age and use. An uncommon item from an important part of film history. Together with an A1 reproduction poster for the classic film, one in a series of five posters included with The Times newspaper as part of a 2006 promotion with Turner Classic Movies.  Original folding creases, else in fine condition.  23.25 x 33.25 inches (59.4 x 84.1 cm.). Portfolio III – Complete Set of Signed Works

Collection of ten oversized images of the portfolio Hurrell III (ca. 1930s-1940s/printed later), each measuring 48" x 36".  Hurrell produced 23 total series, each containing a suite of 10, made from original negatives created by George Hurrell. The images represent some of Hurrell's most innovative work in the glamour portrait genre. Series three includes portraits of: Anna May Wong ca. 1938, Charles Boyer ca. 1938, Joan Crawford in her Brentwood home ca. 1932, violinist Jascha Heifetz, Ann Sheridan ca. 1938, Gilbert Roland ca. 1939, James Cagney, John Barrymore, Veronica Lake, and Gene Tierney. Every print is signed by Hurrell at the lower right corner and numbered 23/50 in the lower left corner. and retains a handwritten edition number in the lower border.  Minor discoloration to the top right corner of one image.
