Signed Dakar "Freres du Theatre d'Afrique" Program

An unusual signed program from a 26 May, 1957 an appearance by the legendary dancer, singer, and actress at the Théâtre du Palais, Dakar during the centenary of the city. The program "Un Hommage à Josephine Baker," featured the "Freres du Theatre d'Afrique / Theatre de L'Ouest Africain / Union Artistique de la Jeunesse Guineenne," with Demba Kanouté performing a poem composed for the occasion, and Mamadou Kouyaté ("coraïste virtuose") and concluded with the official proclamation awarding to Josephine Baker the title of "Présidente d'Honneur de L'Union." Baker has signed "votre grande soeur [your big sister] Josephine Baker" in blue ink to the first page. 8 pp. Gray printed wrappers. In very fine condition.

Collection of five original black and white photographs of the American hard-bop pianist.  Two larger prints, one of them in oblong format (8.75 x 13.25 inches / 22 x 33.3 cm) showing him seated in a chair, the other one, in upright format (13 x 8.5 inches / 33 x 21.2 cm) in a close-up at the piano, face and torso only (no hands).  Three smaller prints, two of them upright (10 x 8 inches / 25.5 x 20.3 cm), showing him seated at the piano, the third, in oblong format (8 x 10 inches / 20.3 x 25 cm) seated on the ground with a miniature piano.  The three smaller photos are in fine condition except for a crease to the upper left corner of the oblong one.  The two larger photos have a few minor cracks, and the oblong one is slightly stained along the left edge. Autograph full score accomplished in pencil in the hand of Louie Bellson and titled on the outer wrapper in red pencil "The Hawk Talks / Original / By Louie Bellson / 1/17/51. / For Harry James Band" and again at the top of the first page of music, " The Hawk Talks." Oblong. 15 large pages, each page with 8 measures scored in full for 18 players (Saxophones, Trumpets, Trombones, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums), noting specific parts intended for ‘Jimmy’ [Cook], ‘Corky’ [Corcoran] and ‘Harry’ [James]. The score bound with three staples along the left margin, final page verso serving as the title wrapper (so upright folio when score is foldedin half). Crease from prior folding through center, final 2 pages with tape staining and some damage along crease, otherwise fine. 45 x 35 cm fully opened; 347 x 453 mm, large 19 stave score sheets by King Brand with eight bars per page. [With:] a typewritten publishing agreement for the composition The Hawk Talks between Tempo Music, Inc. and composer Louie Bellson, dated 25 May 1951, signed in blue ballpoint pen by Bellson, 4pp., 356 x 216 mm. Signed program of the Duke Ellington Orchestra from its 1933 British tour

Souvenir program from the first British tour of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, which took place in June and July 1933 (publication without date or place).  24 pp.  Cover, titled "A Concert of the Music of Duke Ellington / Presented by Jack Hilton /By arrangement with / Irving Mills," signed by the following band members:  Joe Nanton, Fred Guy, Juan Tizol (ball-point pen), Barney Bigard, Johnny Hodges, [illegible], Otto Hardwick, Sonny Greer; all signatures in pencil except Tizol's, which is in ink.  In between, there is a signature by "Richard Jones"; this calls the jazz pianist Richard M. Jones  (1892–1945) to mind, but there is no Richard Jones listed in the biography section of the program.  Includes biographies of all musicians and annotations to all of the 33 pieces performed; the lineup is listed in the center of the program, pp. 12–13.  "Chronological List of the Compositions of Duke Ellington" to inside back cover.  Cover measures 12 x 9 inches (20.5 x 23 cm); pages proper of program measure 11 x 8.75 inches (28 x 22.3 cm).  Brown, sugary stains (cola?) to cover; inner bifolia detached; frayed at edges; tear to foot of back cover; still, a well-preserved copy. Uncommon signed Bruno of Hollywood photograph of the American big band leader, trombonist, and arranger during the 1930s and 1940s, best known for being one of the composers of the song "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You" (with Larry Stock and James Cavanaugh) and who was the first to record it in 1944.  Signed and inscribed in 1949. A spectacular piece of Parker memorabilia, a souvenir of a fine night out at one of Boston's leading jazz clubs, this is a most intriguing photograph of the legendary jazz saxophonist, pictured with a group of fellow musicians at the Hi-Hat Club, Boston, circa 1950, all considerably "lit up" and signed and inscribed to the recipients,  "Pete + Ginny," a couple who may be sitting largely obscured at the back corner of the booth; and also inscribed seemingly to Charlie Parker, by various members of the party including trumpeter Tommy Di Carlo, drummer Paul Drummond, bass player Sonny Dee, trumpeter Joe Gordon, and clarinetist and saxophonist Henry “Boots” Mussulli, who is shown opposite Parker and who appears to have signed under the nom de plume ‘Buddy Mack’ and noted his "respect to the greatest, Charlie Parker," with Di Carlo likewise inscribing "To the greatest ever," and Drummond writing "are you kidding 'Bird.'" An intriguing typed document, 3 pages, first and third of which dated October 3, 1941, on thin typewriter paper, providing three lists of names and their addresses and phone numbers (pages 2-3), evidently an internal studio document. The first page titled "List of names from Fox for their premiere of 'A Yank in the R.A.F." and including names from A - M, among which are Eric Blore, Ray Bolger, Charles Coburn, Ray Milland and others; the second page "Names and Addresses for Milton Berle's Party--Fox" and including such names as Cary Grant, Edgar Bergen, Mickey Rooney, 3 Stooges, John Garfield, Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Desi Arnaz and others; final sheet "Names and Addresses for Jilton[sic] Berle's Party--Fox" and including contacts for, among others, Eleanor Powell, Lana Turner, Dorothy Lamour, and the Andrews Sisters, with the address of Laraine Day crossed out and labeled "wrong."
