Vintage matte photograph by Cannons of LA, ca. 1930s, signed in fountain pen, “Orientally yours / Anna May Wong,” adding her signature in Chinese underneath. Small pinholes to corners, else fine. 4.75 x 6.75 inches; 12 x 17.5 cm.
The actress was the first Chinese-American movie star and the first Asian-American to become an international star. Her long and varied career spanned both silent and sound film, television, stage, and radio. She traveled widely and appeared in films made in Hollywood, Germany, and England, as well as appearing on the vaudeville stage. Although she was remembered until recently mostly for her evil "Dragon Lady" or naive "Butterfly" roles, a recent reawakening of interest has led to a greater appreciation of her wide-ranging talents.
